Evening,

I've recently hit a 'financial low point' and am looking to save money on my transport. So i've been looking into getting a small moped or something.

Now, i know that if you passed your driving test before 2001, you can ride a 50cc with no additional licensing.

But, i have heard all sorts of things around the point that if you passed your cbt on a 50cc motorcycle after the year 2001, and then went on to pass a car driving test within 2 years of the cbt, then one can ride a 50cc without ever having to re-do a cbt?

I dug out my old certificate from my cbt and on the rear, its states:

"This certificate also validates, for the life of the licence, the full moped entitlement granted with a full car license issued in respect of a practical car test passed on or after 1st february 2001 if either:
-the car test is past within 2 years of this certificate being issued, or
- the training course was completed after the car test was passed"

So, i passed my moped cbt in march 2009. I then passed my driving test in june 2010. I read this as i am now fully entitled to ride a moped?

Any clarification would be great!!

Cheers
Rob

so I passed my test in 1990, would I have to do a CBT if I ever wanted to ride a 50cc?

When you don’t need to take CBT
You don’t need to take CBT to ride a moped if you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001.

Sorry I was replying to the thread hijacker...
Did you send your CBT in with your car driving test pass certificate at the time?
It sounds like you should have entitlement but what classes are actually shown on your licence?

Yes the code 122 means awaiting your moped test.
Probably best to get a hold of DVLA and get your licence amended, the CBT pass is missing from it.
They changed the coding in Jan last year but you should be able to prove you have the correct entitlement.

Is that a case of just writing a letter with copies of my certificates etc?

Yeah that's what my provisional says, but I thought you always had to take a CBT to ride a moped.

This is too confusing for me

Oh I see now. I just did some research. Category B is dated in boxes 10 and 11 which means I can drive a car. Category AM which is the vehicle as follows:

Mopeds

Category AM

You can drive 2-wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of over 25km/h (15.5mph) but not more than 45km/h (28mph).

This category also includes light quad bikes with:

  • unladen mass of not more than 350kg (not including batteries if it’s an electric vehicle)
  • maximum design speed of over 25km/h (15.5mph) but not more than 45km/h (28mph)

Has 122 in the '12' box, which means that it is

''122 - valid on successful completion: Basic Moped Training Course''

There is a massive snag to all of the above which my mate discovered.....I have a full bike licence he does not, we both passed our car tests before the CBT cut off date anyway, we both had road legal monkey bikes at the same time, I told him to do a CBT anyway as he had never ridden a bike of any sort ever. He did not want to spend the time or the money doing it as he Legally did not need to but could he get insured? Well yes as it happens but mine was £65 a year his was £1200! With a CBT it dropped to about £175. This was a few years ago I suspect the situation would be even worse now, he found literally one company that would insure mopeds on a pre 2001 car test, you cant even put your details into a comparison site as it will require either your CBT test date or for you to tick the Full UK Motorcycle box.

I should have quoted this in my above post. Legally yes, but without insurance you can't ride legally, finding a company that will insure you isnt easy and will cost way more than a mornings CBT test plus the knowledge gained should be useful on the road.

The thing is i did do my cbt, then passed my car test within the 2 years stated on my certificate, to entitle me to a full moped licence. Its just i havent sent off my cbt with my driving licence with my cbt certificate, so its not actually on my current driving licence.
Is this something that can be sorted or did i miss my chance?
