I noticed today that my engine has started rattling, it happens when idleing when I rev it, if I push the throttle in a bit it rattles as in the video below (if I push the throttle in slower it doesn't happen). I left the clutch in and tried it and it didn't happen. Could it be the thrust bearing?

It's a 998 1985 Ritz

click on the image below to play the video, it first happens at 6 seconds then around 9 secs,12s...

To make it clear, it didn't happen when you pushed the clutch in and tried it?

Well this would suggest something to do with the thrust bearings, but I can't imagine they would make that sort of noise. Wait for more expertise to comment

If the noise dissapears when you have your foot on the clutch it will either be ( pretty convinced of this ) the release bearing or idler transfer gear. I had the same problem and it was the idler gear bearing that failed. It started to chew the inside of the transfer case......

Thank you very much guys, Dad did say this morning they make more of a whining noise (like a wheel bearing would make a rumbling noise). We'll have to have alook at it then, Is it a big job to replace it then badboytunes?

to be honest.... I entrusted the work to Guessworks ( member on here ) .

I would suspect that it is the clutch release bearing although, as stated, it could be the idler gear/bearing as per my previous posts.

Some say that the clutch canbe changed in-situ but if I were to do it, then I wouls ( as was done tomine ) remove the engine and box for easier access. I also had the gearbox rebuilt at the same time.

Cheers
