So I made a thread the other day saying that basically everything had stopped working so my indicators, headlights, brake lights and front and rear lights. Last night my friend got everything working again and told me what needed changing so I got around to changing a few fuses earlier and everything stopped working again.

I've managed to get my headlights and rear lights working again with some fuse jiggling and changing but I've still had no luck with my indicators and brake lights, I've been around all the fuses in the fuse box (1990 Mini City so the four fuses in there) and there's now continuity across all of them so they're all fine.

My friend seemed to think that my main problem was the relay underneath the steering column. (The pink 12 Volt relay). He said that it was probably just crap connections in there and even last night on my way home the indicators and brake lights stopped working again so I cable tied that relay up a bit higher and jiggled the wires about and the indicators and brake lights randomly decided to start working again on my way home.

Any ideas, any help is very much appreciated  :(

You need to inspect the connection on the multiplug at the base of the cowling and check by pulling it apart and inspecting the pins, check for a circuit in and out on the wiring associated with the indicators, your wiring colours are here http://www.theminifo...it-colours-mk4/

While your down there check for a 12v feed into and out of the brake light switch and then follow the circuit in the boot to the brake lights. 12v into the brake light switch is the Green wire and out of the switch back to the brake lights is Green/purple. Checking the earth point in the boot as well. Testing the 12v in on the Green/purple on the brake light connection will confirm if its a earth fault.

Do the hazards work? Mine stopped working the other day, had a really inconsistent click from the flasher unit and nothing got them to work. Even though the hazards work!

I checked all the fuses etc... but it turned out to be the indicator relay at the left of the engine bay. Was just a dodgy connection (corroded), once I cleaned up the contacts (well scratched them up for a new surface) the indicators worked fine! It's because the hazards work on a separate power source than the indicators so the relay wasn't doing anything for the hazards. But that doesn't mean it won't work for you.

It's worth checking, mine was a small yellow relay at the back left of the engine bay. It's one of the 2 there, can't remember which one though :)

Good luck!

Cameron.

Yes my hazards still work fine, basically I've sussed it now.

The green wire that goes into the pink relay is crap I think, if I jam something in there to push the wire in then the indicators start working again, not sure if the brake lights worked too though because now even jamming the wire in has stopped working, reckon it needs re-crimping or something?

Either way I'll probably order a new relay in a minute  :mmkay:

That could again be a corroded connector. Take the connector and wire out. Clean all the connections and re-crimp it. It's worth a try, eliminate the easy to do/free things before you buy stuff. It might not be the relay at fault, might just be the connection meaning a new relay may not help it.

Okay will do, I cant do it myself as I don't have anything to get the wire out or a crimping tool  :mmkay:

I can't remember what the connector is like but it may just be a case of pushing a small 'blade' or tab in the connector and the metal contact/pin/socket will pop out. If it is then it may be possible to do with a small screwdriver (be very careful though as you don't want to break the connector!) and it may also just be a case of re-crimping the wire with a pair of pliers, or like you say you may need a crimping tool. All depends on the type of connector :)

Hope that helps,

Cam.

Cheers mate hopefully a small flathead screwdriver will get it out then!

Usually lucars can be removed by sliding a small split pin opened up and slid in the depress the locking leg from the front of the connector
