Right, I'm thinking of going down an entirely different route now. I think I'll just get OA's standard boot kit, and build a sub box to either put the sub on the rear shelf or against the rear seat panel.

While I'm here, do people recommend Hertz components? I'm thinking of getting a pair of them and a FLI amp.

I'm looking at getting probably either Hertz or Focal comps. I'm going to do more research first though.

What 4 channel amp would you recommend for around £100?

For £100, none personally :P

If my budget was £100 I'd run the comps off the HU and amp the sub with a Genesis Profile sub, worth checking out talkaudio - might be an A3 or something going for around £100 though. Assuming you're talking about 4channels with a view to bridging 2 for the sub?

That was the plan, yes. How about if I upped the amp budget to £200?

£200 will get you some very nice amplifiers.
You could snag a DLS A5 for £200 if you're lucky, although they are pretty hungry on power.

Or a pair of Genesis Profiles (which I use), a P4 for your comps and a Psub for the sub (obviously).

Those would be my preference but I'm sure others will offer their suggestions fast enough.

Either way, £200 allows for some pretty tasty gear. How much have you allocated for vehicle prep? Deadening / damping / isolation / etc.?

The budget is pretty open at the moment (within reason), as I'm doing a full rebuild of my car so I want to get it right the first time. All deadening etc. will be done with Silent Coat and flashing tape.

I'll have a look into the amps you have mentioned, thanks.

That's a very good value amp for that money. But its in the 'Value' market if you know what i mean.

Yeah I know what you mean, but I'd rather spend a bit more on a really good head unit as that has more of an effect on sound quality than a power amp. If it does the job and is good value and is built well, I think it should be okay. I want to spend a bit of money and get some really good drivers up front, and a decent sub.

£200 was really the upper end of my budget, so that Genesis is pushing it a bit.

Eeeerm... Not really, no.
There's zero point having a super-mega-ultra-swanky HU if your zero distortion, crystal clear signal is then being sent to a pound-land amplifier to be brutalised before pumping out a sloppy charge travelling to your high end speaker set up.

It's weakest link territory, dude. The build will only be as good as it.

What HU are you looking at, by the way?

Not looking at any particular HU at the moment.

I can't imagine JL Audio produce products comparable to pound land products.

Ultimately though, an amp is just that, something that amplifies a signal. As long as it is built to a good standard with good quality components, the HU (preamp) and speakers will have a far greater effect on overall sound quality.

To be honest though, I'm not going to be spending a huge amount on a sound system for my Mini as it's never going to be a HiFi system. I just want something reasonably loud that sounds great without spending too much.

One question, have you heard any amps so far? Also have you heard any of the speakers so far?

Not to muddy what you guys are saying about JL but have you guys and the OP heard them? Audio is very subjective, this guy could spend much more on the amp but not know the difference because he has no reference point.

My thoughts are, go with the best of what you can afford. If the JL is more affordable for you and you can't reach to the better second hand stuff atm then personally I would start with the JL. If say a year down the road you want to upgrade you got a base for what your mini currently sounds like and you can make better decisions based on actual first hand knowledge and hear the difference in sound.

My opinion is (it might not be welcome  :shy: ) audio is about the journey to the best, without starting somewhere you won't know the benefits are after spending a bag of money.
