I will be buying a sub enclosure which has a volume of 17.2 litres, however all the 10" and 12" subs that I can find require at least a 25 litre enclosure.

Does anyone know of any decent subs that work well in a 17.2L enclosure?

Thanks

You'll have a push to get one with that small an optimal capacity, especially when you subtract the displacement of the sub itself from that 17L.

My advice would be look for shallow fitment 10", you'll pay a premium for it though.

Another 2 things you can do to help the situation is buy some polyfil to fill the encloser with which will boost the effective volume by about 10%, if you buy it from an audio store expect to pay north of £20 for it, personally I use Asda pillows - at about £3 for a pair (enough for 4 enclosures) they're much better value and the same material.

The second would be depending on if you're willing to fiddle with the box, you could buy a 10" diameter speaker ring (£5 on eBay, or make one) 30mm thick which would significantly reduce the subs displacement in the box.

I believe the JL Audio 10w3 requires a 17L enclosure. But you have to take the displacement into consideration, which is about 1.5L IIRC.
You could mount it upside down, so that there's no displacement.......

Failing that, the slimline sub from JL Audio requires 15L of space, I'm not sure of its displacement but Its not going to be as much as 2L!

The 10w3 indeed has a displacement of 1.4L, if you polyfil the box (+10% of 17L) you'd get a suitable internal volume for it from the enclosure you want to buy.

Harrysmini where/how do you plan to install the sub?

You can could get clever and use an AP membrane to 'make' the box bigger.

I've just looked at those shallow fitment subs, that's most likely the way to go.

I plan to incorporate the sub box into a boot lining kit (I will either make one or buy one), the one I was looking at buying the Opt Auto lining kit which has a 17.2L sub enclosure.

If you're not shy of hand tools you could make a much more discreet enclosure for the boot than the OA one, which is pretty much just a box stuck on the side of a lining kit. It's possible to incorporate the sub above the wheel arch with only an inch or two protrusion into the boot area, frees up space and gives a much better aesthetic.

Ruckus, myself and others have all done this in the past to good effect.

Bit like this (With a better sub :P):

I would love to do that, however I face two problems. My washer bottle is in the boot and I'd quite like to keep it there, and I'm not confident using fibreglass.

This looks like a great solution, but as Harry said below it would mean moving the washer bottle. Where have you guys put yours?

When I had that set up I moved the washer bottle to the passenger bin, but I've since about faced and moved the sub there instead :P

That's probably what I'd do if I wanted to mess around with fibreglass. I'd have one in each rear bin.

I think I'll probably just get the OA kit, as I can't make one for any cheaper, and it's nice and simple.

I'll look into the 10w3, as it should be around the right size once the enclosure if filled.

if you go this route you do not need to use fibre glass, mine was done with cloth from an audio store and resin
