I have a 1992 Open Classic which has a standard exhaust with a catalytic converter. I've been advised by MiniSpares that I could remove the cat and replace it with a straight pipe.

Is this commonplace? will it then fail it's next MOT because the cat has been removed?

I 'think' what he was saying is that because the mini has a carb that it doesn't need the cat because the emission standards are not the same as fuel injected minis?

A carb car doesn't require the CAT for the MOT, regardless of whether it was fitted as standard.

That is correct, you can legally remove the CAT on a carbed mini for MOT purposes. The MOT only requires a CAT to be present where one was fitted as standard, if the car is required to pass a full CAT emissions test, which only applies to fuel injection models.

Be warned though, there is a lot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the regs over this issue, (even amongst MOT inspectors) so don't be surprised if someone tries to tell you otherwise. You'll also need to find an MOT inspector who understands how the regs are applied to older/classic cars.
