a 096 might go in depending on what "hold down" style it is. Some  batteries dont have the sticky out ridges at the bottom and some do. It all depends on what its supposed to be fitted too.

 

For example, my MG ZR used a small metal clamp which held the sticky out plastic parts of the battery casing.

My volvo, used a clamp across the top of the battery.

That is true, it really depends on the make of the battery. I just went to Halfords and looked for the smallest 096 there was, and bought elsewhere. 

 

The only reason I'm using an 096 in my Mini is because I'm fitting a powerful sound system and other electrical items (including a work lamp), so I like to think I've got lots of reserve power when the engine is switched off.
