Gauge Multi-Plug Connections

Just got a tachometer and it has a cable for illumination, I assume I need to wire this up to the cable for the gauges, but which one is that?

Red/green up until the sidelights got split onto 2 circuits around 1994, red/white from then on.

Mines an 89 so red green then? Is red positive and green negative then?

No. The supply wire is red/green, red with a green tracer (notice that's not green/red which is the left hand indicator, the cable you need is mostly red with a thin green stripe). The majority of cars use the body as the negative, it's referred to as earth and all negatives eventually run to the body. In British Standard car wiring earth cables are black. There is a table of all the colours in the FAQ section, each colour code means something specific.
