I have a 1990 Rover Mini 998cc engine and it's been running alright however I've just come to take it off the drive (been sat 20 minutes or so after a 10 mile drive) and its stalled when i got to the top, I could smell burning and see 3 oil patches on the floor at the back of the car and oil has splashed all up the back. I could smell burning coming from somewhere so i lifted the bonnet and checked for any signs of burning but couldn't see anything. Left it alone for 10 minutes and tried to start it which it did so i let it run for a minute or so and the smell of burning came back so i shut off the engine and I've left it be until i can get some advice on how to proceed. My drive is rather steep and not flat and as for pushing it off the drive to get an accurate reading of oil levels ect isn't a possibility until later when I can get more hands to push it off, if anyone has any advice or any input of what is wrong with it and if it's possible for me to fix it myself without spending too much at a garage it would be appreciated.

Thanks for any help/advice you can give

Josh

Do you have an oil gauge? if so is it indicating pressure?

It could be a full drip tank.... I think that's what its called... the thing that gets filled up by the pipe from the breather. Overflowing and so on the ground (or very very hot part of engine/exhaust), and as its full its not breathing forcing oil into the exhaust. I could be totally wrong, but it doesn't hurt to check the little box anyway.
