Ribbed ones are usually late mk1 and mk2. I have seen mk3 bootlids ribbed too.

I always thought that the reason for the ribbed/double skinned boot lid on early models, was because it was designed to carry luggage with the boot lid open, hence the reason for the drop down number plate as well.

The Mk1 open frame bootlids often had a black trim panel fitted with self-tapping screws and cup washers around the edges, the Mk2 bootlids were double skinned with the ribbed panel which saved fitting a seperate trim panel. The Mk3 onwards eventually reverted to the open frame but many pattern panel bootlids retained the double skin.

I think it was only used for about 4/5 years

My '63 has a single skin boot lid. It has no liner and no holes to indicate that one had ever been fitted.
