Greetings.

Im looking at a 92 Sprite which has a 1275cc engine with the power quoted at 53bhp. I believe its an A+ engine, but I'm confused as other 1275 A+ engines have higher power figures. (such as cooper for example)

My intention is to purchase the car as a long term project which I will tune over time. I'd like to start with an engine that has the most potential for tuning. Does the Sprite engine have lower compression than the cooper or something? A different head or cam? Basically, why is the sprite underpowered compared to other A+'s?

Basically, am I missing out on valuable tuning potential getting the sprite over something with a higher original bhp figure?

Any other differences I should know about?

Thanks in advance.

You have kind of answered your own question the sprite came with the lowest compression pistons fitted same cam I believe but tfe head may have been with different sized valves and the cooper head would be better flowing

It depends on what you want to do to the engine. You will fit a better cam as that's where most of the power is gained along with head work and just to be on the safe side and have an almost new engine you would over bore meaning new pistons anyway so as a base to modify then any a+ engine is fine

This is the most perfect engine base on which to build bolt on power for fast road work. Without a cam change it is possible to archieve more than 80hp without removing the engine. St1 kit, flowed head matched inlet manifold, 1.5 rockers and custom dizzy curve with a larger HIF44 su carb. Icing on the cake is a lightened flywheel. No loss in low end torque either as the original cam is so mild. Obviously your end results depend on proper tuning and how good your engine is to start with.

This is good news indeed. Thank you both.
