I've got a small tear in the roof lining of my '95 SPi, where the passenger side sun visor has been shoved through it - does any one have any bright ideas/ experience as to the best way of mending this?

I don't want it getting any bigger (which it will do because every time you push the passenger seat forward it shoves the visor into the tear!)

Could I sew and glue it, or is there some magic "Mini lining repair tape" on the market somewhere...?

Any advice gratefully appreciated!

Tricky this - and I'm sure that there are better solutions  but.... providing you've got a suitable patch to hand I'd insert a strip of ducktape behind the tear and match up the edges as best you can (never going to be perfect as the lining is under tension) then glue a patch over the top...will not result in a pretty repair but may stop things getting worse...

The more satisfactory option is to pop the screen out  and gently prise the lining away from the lip- that would enable you to put pressure on from the back to ensure contact.....

The only wholly satisfactory solution is a new headlining kit - which is a total swine to get spot on....and costly too!

Thanks wile - I think I'll go the duct tape/patch route  - I have painful memories of popping the front screen out: http://www.theminifo...ns-in-24-hours/

Duck tape from the back and spray paint to re-fresh the old lining, thats the easiest way.

Having a Mk1, I am not familiar with how hard it is to access the back side of the headliner on a car like yours.  I assume "not easy".  The headliner in my car is original and patched.  I was able to remove it to apply a patch to the back side using a strip of vinyl and vinyl glue.  The torn edges on the front side were then covered with a bit more ov vinyl glue (sparingly) and the whole thing "painted" with SEM brand vinyl dye.  SEM is probably not available in the U.K. but I am sure you will have similar brands.  The Back side patch gives the repair strength and the vinyl dye does as much as possible to conceal the tear once the ends are "smoothed over" on the front with a bit of vinyl glue.

I have the same on on my Spi, a 4cm split right at the seem of the liner, under the sun visor.

I am tempted to add a bit of suitable tape behind it and then stitch it using a moon shaped needle. I think without the support of something behind the tear the stitching will just rip through.
