I know they used to have a bad rep - wheels not round, tyres not fitting them etc.  Anyone have a set of midland wheels? What are they like these days?  I fancy a set of D1s but they're few and far between for the real thing - especially 12s so I was half thinking of getting some D1 relplicas.  The only place that makes them is midland wheels but I don't want to waste my money on a load of carp or buy into a load of trouble!  Let me know what you think of them :)

Cheers

it's the customer service that's bad as well as the wheels they sell

So, do they manufacture on site? Can an alternative manufacturer be found?

ive got a set of mw d1s on mine. No problems at all with tyres and the wheels don't seem to bad, the laqour is a bit thin but if kept clean you should be ok. No they don't manufacture on site, the wheels are made else where (china most likley) and branded john brown wheels (jbw)

The problem with the wheels they sell is the polished rims on some of them are lacquered over smooth polished alloy which peels off and traps water, corroding the alloy. Any decent wheel manufacturer would know to leave it as bare alloy.

The all-painted ones should be OK though, but I've heard they are hard to get tyres on. Hence why there are lots of wheel/tyre packages for sale with bald tyres (because the owner can't remove the tyres)

there is no problem changing tyres on them at all. There was 1 design that had problems. Cant remember what it was but certainly wasn't d1s. Some tyre fitters cant do 10s as the machine they use wont go small enough, that is a very small number though and the ops after 12s so should be fine anywhere

Yeah I think it was one of the 10" Minilight versions that had the problems.

it was indeed the 6x10 ulltralight copies, i had a set and found due to the design of the wheel no one could get tyres on them without ripping the bead. there were tons of other people who had the same problem though and one guy who had a blowout on the motorway when the tyre let go.

as for the 12" D1s they arnt that wide so i cant see there being a problem with getting tyres on them, i would feel better if i had seen one of the wheels without a tyre on beforehand though.

I've also got 12x5 D1's on my mini from midland wheels, no problems with them so far other than the fact the centre caps don't clips on properly so they spin round, as said the laquour isn't fantasic but if you look after them, keep them clean and put a sealer over the top of them they'll stay alright, there's some photos on my profile if you want to have a look :)

Think the biggest thing is the profile of the copy d1's. It's flat and has no curve / dish / offset, like a proper d1.
