A K&N filter in a modified air box has been proven to be more effective than a cone filter, so that's what I would recommend.

Also, Valvoline VR1 20w50 mineral oil will be perfect for your engine.

This really has been done to death in the technical sections. Do a search and there are numerous threads. But basically any decent 20w50 will be ok for a manual and 10w40 for an auto.

Morris lubricants is good

But do not use halfrauds classic oil.

I have tried it in a mini & a m8 used it in a mk1 fiesta & they burnt oil. Replaced with good 20w 50  problem stopped.

Agreed. I couldn't get the Halfords stuff out of mine quick enough - the oil pressure was dreadful. The Morris golden film 20/50 on the other hand was superb. Very underrated and superb value.

Whatever oil you use make sure it is Mini gearbox friendly as very few other cars whether modern or classic need an oil suitable for a combined engine/gearbox any longer.

What are these stub stacks? Do they really make a difference

^^^ a stub stack helps improve the flow of air into the carb. I have the Turner carbs stub (similar to med but much cheaper) and ramair filter (similar to itg but much cheaper).

I got much better results on the rolling road with that set up in comparison to a k&n cone and no stub.
