Hi, Sorry for asking yet another question, but bob my 98 mpi has a bit of a misfire, i recon it could be from a damaged HT lead. They are quite old and could do with being changed, as do the plugs, so even if it doesn't solve the misfire its something that is about due being replaced.

So what HT leads are best, I dont mind too much about the price, I want absolute quality, ideally blue, yellow or red.... but colour really doesn't matter.
Also spark plugs, which make to go for and what code, also what gap should they have?
Finally, on a bit of a side really, oil, is 20/50w correct for an MPI?

If this doesn't work what else could cause the car to run a little rough on low revs, and at 1,800 hold back, make a sucky grindy noise, backfire, then go again. Its only happens since it had a new gearbox which left the car unused outside for 4 months.

All help really appreciated :)

Thanks, James

a good service is always the best place to start.

I recommend the following:

Spark plugs NGKBPR6E, set gap to 0.8 - 0.9mm

Ignition Leads GHT289 http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Electrics/Ignition/Service_parts/GHT289.aspx?090804&ReturnUrl=/shop/classic/cables/brake.aspx%7CBack%20to%20shop

Oil filter http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Filters/Oil/GFE280.aspx?1203&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/oil filter.aspx

Air filter http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Filters/Air/GFE1143.aspx?1201&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/air filter.aspx

consider a K&N replacement if funds allow.

It might be worth replacing the Fuel filter http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Filters/Fuel/GFE7057.aspx?1202&ReturnUrl=/product/Classic/Filters/Air/GFE1143.aspx

And for the oil, always 20W50, this stuff is considered the best http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Valvoline-VR1-Racing-Mineral-20W50-Engine-Oil-5-Litre-/290930820166

It would also be worth checking valve clearances, when cold they should be 0.27 - 0.33.

Who did the gearbox? and wasn't the oil done at that time?

anyway sort out the above then come back on here and let us know.

On the topic of the fuel filter, if like mine your mpi has solid metal pipes going into and out of the filter then you will be unable to clamp them. So best plan to do it once the tank is low and then syphon out the rest.
