Valvoline VR1 is the best readily available oil to use in most A Series engines. I use it in all our Minis and will use nothing else. It's also very reasonably priced.

Thought it might be, Ive read on various sites that its the one to go for, I just wondered specifically if it was as good for the Mini with its shared gearbox and engine oil - appears that it is! Ill order 5 liters.

Its been analysed few times on BITOG, its a very good oil at holding pressure up and contains the right ammount of ZDDP to protect a flat tappet engine.

After the demise of Kendall 20w50 in the UK, Valvoline Racing 20w50 is now the very best available.

Spot on, cheers Will :) I changed the oil a month or so ago but only had the cheap stuff to hand and dont want to run the new head or the rest of the engine with it for longer than necessary, so VR1 it is! Just realized that tomorrow will be exactly a year since we shook hands on the sale!

VR1 is also the only readily available AUTOMOTIVE oil in the U.S. with ZDDP.  There are some diesel oils and specialty oils we can buy with ZDDP but VR1 is the one you are most likely to find at the parts store.

I run it in all my older British cars,  I currently have about 18 quarts of it in the garage since I buy it when it is on sale.
