Well today I managed to remove the Rear Subframe single handed!!! and didn't break anything in the process!!!

Quite impressed with myself :-)

At first glance after a quick brush off with a wire brush it looked in pretty good nick all things considered however on closer inspection with a screwdriver a found a couple of rusted areas:

First spot is inside rear RH side:

Second spot is on the front top RH side:

Is the rust damage in both the pics above weldable? Or am I looking at a replacement - can't afford a new Subby!!!

The front mounting trunnions also look a little worse for wear but these can be replaced can't they?

Heres the whole thing out - not a lot of space in my garage I'm afraid!!

Well done that man! Taking a sub out on your own is a bit of a faff but very satisfying  when it comes out that nicely....a good clean up and I'd reuse those trunnions...

After all that what state is the heelboard in?

As regards the subframe the corrosion on the top is easily weldable...... the penetrated corrosion  by the spring however...hmm personally I'd replace the whole frame - it looks very very thin in places - theres not much meat in the metal on a new frame anyway but the rib below the spring really does look wafer thin and with holes....having experienced a subframe letting go it really isn't funny - not to mention dangerous....

So IMHO it's either "bodge" (sorry) now or bite the bullet and be confident in the long term integrity of your car...

As the Subframe came loose on the LH side I was confronted with nice hole into the sill, I was not surprised to be honest!!!

However, the rest of the Heelboard on first inspection seems OK :-) but I'll know more once I clean it up.

Here's the whole - pretty standard I suppose:

The LH side of the Mini seems to be the worst all round.

With regards to the Subframe like I said a new Subby is out of the question, but that said I'm not going to skip on safety, i'll clean this one up so I can have a good look then I'll make a decision as to whether I can affect a repair or seek out a second hand subby?

Different stubby for me afraid....

Welding may attract crabbing.....don't want rear to overtake the front.....
