I get the same comment of the elderly guy next door to me
" hurry up and get that mini on the road"
But hes awesome , even has an original factory build book "borrowed" from when he used to work there

I had a Mini in my grandparents garage years ago that i used to tinker with. Their neighbour used to come outside and make sarcastic comments about how i would never get it back on the road and that i should just scrap it.

He used to really annoy me but in the end, it turned out he was right. Mind you i was only 15 or 16 with no real tools to speak of so it was always doomed, i just didn't see it at the time!

You should take him for a spin when you get it on the road, bet he'd love that! Took my grandad out in mine last xmas and he was just ear to ear smiling and laughing! Then told me about the Mini's he'd had way back in the 60's 70's and 80's! Out of all the presents he got I think the ride in the Mini was his highlight of xmas :D (he didn't know I'd bought one till he arrived for xmas dinner) :-)

There's not many cars that have the effect of a Mini, as I've said before on posts, I've been next to cars worth £100k+ and my Mini gets all the attention!

Even had a little girl about 8 or 9 a couple of weeks ago shouting 'phat car' lol! Think that means it's cool :D

Pulled up outside machine mart to park up to go buy some tools and a car comes screaming in behind me and some guy jumps out and asks me if I'd sell him the Mini, haha! I'd only bought it 3 days prior
:)

Had a guy in a new mercedes say he got married in a new mini in 66 when filling up. Asked him if he still had it, and that it would be worth quite a bit if he did. He replied, the mistakes one makes in life... sold it decades ago.

Not quite a petrol station quote but a petrol station knowing look...

Pulled up at the garage today and there was what I thought was an Austin 1100/1300 filling up.  I was in the queue admiring it, the fella looks over and spots me and gives me a big wave.  I pulled up to the pumps and it was a Riley, an Austin 1100 with a swanky grill and in very good condition.  (is it just NZ/Aus they were known as a Kestrel?) I was filling up and the bloke came out from paying, then he walks into a Clio he was looking so hard at my car :-)  He jumps in his Riley and I get another big wave and knowing smile from him and a big wave from his Grandson.

Why do the Austins sound so different to a mini?  Start-up sounds different, tick-over sounds different and the pulling away sounds different.  I noticed it 30 years ago when my Dad had one and still can't figure it out.

When in one of the Minis, I usually get "Oh, I used to have one of these" and all the fond memory stories that come with it, I seldom have the time, but I do always love listening to them non the less.

However, in the Moke, it's quite a different story. I seem to only get propositions from young ladies, I'm never tempted to take them up on any of the offers though, they are really only interested in the car,,,,,,,

This post brings back memories of the last time I went to a petrol station in a mini. It was about 20 yrs ago in a very nice mk1 cooper I had just rebuilt for sale. I was filling up and a young girl (10ish) got out of a car looking very nervous and came over, she said in broken english was the car for sale!!!! I looked at the car she had got out of and 'dad' was looking very attentive, I told her yes and gave her my contact No. She went back to the car and it drove off. I thought nothing of it but next day got a call from a very beautifully spoken but accented lady who explained that Mr ........ her boss had seen the car and as he couldnt speak english got his daughter to ask me. To cut a long story short an appointment was made and he duly arrived in a rather nice Audi along with two children and a georgeous wife dripping Gucci. He looked at the car for about 5 mins had a brief drive and said yes he would buy it and made me and offer of the Audi plus cash on the spot! I tried to put him off a bit as it seemed too strange but no now or never so I ran an HPI and it was clean so the deal was done and off he and his family drove. Reason he was in a hurry was he was running late for the ferry to drive all the way back to Italy!!! Now that is what I would call optomistic, it was a very good car but I had only driven to the test station and back. Well happy days!

P.S. drove the Audi for many years did'nt miss a beat.
