i get some kind of comment, thumbs up, nod etc everytime i go out in my car, but my favorites are when they give you some kind of compliment about it, backed up by a story about the one they had.......

"i used to have a mk1 cooper s, bought it brand new" from a guy who is about 50, so not nearly old enough to have had one new, unless he was a child still

"i used to have one of them clubmans, you know the GT" i had it from brand new" and the guy is about 40, so again not old enough to have driven it if he did

with the metro its always "thats mint mate" or "i aint seen one of them for years" followed by "i used to have a turbo, bought it brand new"

honestly, if everyone who makes these claims was right, you would think austin never made a standard model and all they made were sporty models!

That's because they forget where the origins of BL come from, the original pre war Austin 7. They are gorgeous.

I used to have one , a boat tail hillclimb special, with a coopers grandad engine in, I bought it brand new.

Aye, 'em were the days, coal for breakfast and a dead frog between eight for tea, it was 'ard.

But back on topic, I have had a few nice comments about the minis over the years, but nothing compared to when I used to go out on my 1958 James L15 cadet, you couldn't go anywhere without people coming over (my bigger classic bikes get a fraction of the attention).

73-years-old and still driving sideways (and laughing about it). I have promised to teach a young Mini owner how to do handbrake turns when I can find the time.

Most excellent!

MOT tester's dad (who works in the garage too I think) told the MOT tester he was conceived in a Mini.

Awkward.

Today's quote from a complete stranger at the next pump on the forecourt.... "Nice car, it really suits you!"

So what's that supposed to mean exactly? That I'm also small, old and rapidly falling apart? (Sadly that's actually a fairly accurate description though)

Sat in traffic last Summer with my brother when it was extremely hot we had to open the doors as the sliding windows just weren't enough.

The old chap sat next to us wound the window down on his lovely new jag and said.

"Air conditioning is a wonderful thing, I don't miss that at all"

Made me chuckle!

You should fit a set of those lovely chrome arches........  :X

Also a good one of 'I sold my MK1 Cooper S for £200 in 1976'  When I told him what it would be worth now, he didnt hang about long

Also had 'I had one the very same colour as that in the 70s'  No you didnt, the colour was only out from 90-92.......
