Hi, am looking to change all my shocks this weekend..... it's a 1993 cooper si, about 85bhp. Ive had all the cones changed by minispeed recently and they set up the suspension as well. the problem is that when I have a passenger in and my 6yr old daughter in the back, if we hit any kind of lump or bump the passenger rear tyre scuffs the inside of the arch.

Can anyone recommend a good set of shocks? Not looking to run it low... has got spax adjustables on there at the mo but they have been on for at least 10 years.

Also, to cure a "knocking" on the front end Minispeed solid mounted the teardrops, but nothing else. Is this ok? Didn't cure the knocking at all!! (Doesn't knock with a passenger in, only when just the driver) Am dropping the subframe this weekend to have a look and try and kind the problem but some people suggested rubber mounting them again and checking the towers....

thoughts?

cheers!

Protech are superb, not the cheapest but good value for money. They are fully rebuildable so work out very reasonable over time. I have had four sets on various cars and can't fault them.plus Kevin who runs it is a top bloke and they are British made.

I find the KYB silver dampers the best value for the money.

That said, yours is a problem with suspension cones that need replacing.

Maybe your dampers are shot aswell, but that ride problem is not the dampers, the dampers will make you loose grip, its the cones that collapsed.

what size wheels do you have that are causing the rub? It is likely that the problem is to do with wear in the rear radius arms especially if it is only happening on one side. Although 10 year old shocks may well have wear I would check the rear suspension for wear and damage first.

AGX Evolution shocks are the best I've tried. They are made by KYB.

cheers for the sugestions... Re. the suspension, all the cones are literally 4 weeks old... wheels are standard original rover minilites, 12", running 165 60 yokos... Will check the radius arms whilst down there....

4 weeks old cones will make your car sit high, unless you got hilos. Whats the clearance between arches and tyres?

Adjust the hilos, you should re-adjust them after cones settle in a few weeks, you cant fault minispeed.

will do.... just a bit annoyed with them to be honest as the original problem it went in for was to sort the knocking.... twice they said it was all fixed and sent me on my way and both times no different... just me out of pocket. Plus a 70 mile round trip each time and I spotted a big chunk of paint taken out of the scuttle and bonnet corner when I got it home. Have had good work done there previously, this time not so good.

Luckily my father in law is superb with minis so we are tackling it this weekend.

made a start on the car saturday, first thing we found was near side top swivel was without its rubber cover and had loads of play..... sorted this out..... then looked at the knuckle on the top arm.... it had broken through the cup and was grinding out the top arm! New arm and knuckle ordered. Odd as this would have all been apart when the garage did the rubber cones? Huge coincidence if it all happened since in 100 miles...! Shocks swapped ready, just need to fit up new arm and get it back together, then test drive it and see if we fixed the knocking! Annoying thing was when changing the rear shocks found a nail in a tyre that is too close to the edge to be fixed...... almost brand new as well!
