thanks for all the replies ! has been really helpful,

as far as im aware I don't really have a budget It will be a long slow build.. so definitely thinking about the b16 or b18..

maybe a silly question but is there enough power in the b16 for a mini as I want it for track use or would it be better to pay the extra and go for the b18

Is there ever enough power.. haha! But seriously, you can draw quite good power out of the b16 as KMP has shown in the figures before. 190hp in a stripped out track car sub 700kg equates to roughly as 270hp/tonne, if my maths is correct, which will go like sh*t off a shovel! Bear in mind though the cost involved to get you there.

It really depends on how far you are wanting to take your car. Start off with a b16 and tune it with some bolt on mods and achieve similar figures to KMP but what happens if you feel you want more? Strip the b16 down and have work done, maybe bigger valves, stroker kit etc etc its going to cost a lot of money! Or start with a b18 and have more power out of the box with the potential for higher output with similar mods. You can pick up a civic/aerodeck with a b18c4 engine for less than a grand and thats road worthy, find one sorn one and you'll probably half that price. Then all you'll need is to strip it, rebuild the engine (which I'd do anyway to save you having to pull it all out again a few months down the line) and weigh the rest of the car in to try offset your costs.

I would say though there is a point that you'll reach in tuning this sort of build that will exceed the 'usable' power. Its all well and good saying to your mates in the pub that you have a 300hp vtec mini but when you see small hatchbacks pull away from you on track because you can't put the power down I'm sure you will be slightly peeved. Again I would say go have a read of some of the guys builds on here as well as some over on the 16vminiclub forum, you'll get an idea of how their builds have gone and what is actually 'enough' power in a mini.

My mini is in the Honda build section under the same forum name as here if you were interested in seeing my build, most people on there do them differently. My mini weighs 700kgs inc. driver, I have a full roll cage in it too :-). I have fibreglass doors, boot, whole 1 piece flip front - front end and roof, its stripped out with 2 buckets and polycarbonate windows so it's quite.....light lol. There is a 400bhp+ 2.4l evo engined mini on there that's 4wd and runs on methanol that weighs about 500-600kgs!!! It has the 4wd evo running gear though so it gets the power down well!

Thanks
Kris

b16's are fun. my mates got a civic coupe with a b16 with manifold and air filter ect, minimal mods and it flys!

is there much difference in the conversion between the 16 and 18?

yes about putting the power down I was thinking off a diff but have seen some of the engines come with the lsd as standard is this correct? but knowing my luck will not be in the b18 haha

will check through the thread now :)

There isn't any real difference between the two.

As far as I'm away both the b16 and b18 type r engines came with an lsd and so does the b18c4/5/6/7.
