I've removed the subframe and power unit from the car.

Now I need to remove the driveshafts from the gearbox.  I'm not finding the Haynes manual very helpful.  Can someone tell me whether I have Hardy-Spicer or inner rubber coupling joints?  Whichever I have, how do I proceed with disassembly?

I am going through the same process. Looks like you have the Pot joint type inner CV.

I used a wide and blunt builders chisel after seeing this video on you tube, and just gave them a tap, it didn't take much.

Rocket, that's a very useful reference.  My Mini is a '74.  Do you have a source for a '74 version of the repair manual?

Westy, brilliant video, but I think I asked the wrong question.  I need to remove the driveshafts in order to lift the power unit from the front subframe.  When I have removed the trailing arm and upper and lower suspension arms, do I simply pull the driveshaft away from the pot joints?

If you undo the balljoints top and bottom of the hub, undo the steering arms, and if connected the brake flexipipes.

The drive shafts can then pull free of the gearbox.

I'm not sure if the hub end will pull through the hole in the subframe, the gearbox end doesn't so you may need to split off the CV joint.

Nothing specifically for a 74. But here is some additional info:

DO NOT use a bolster chisel, or any other tool, between the pot joint and diff side cover, which is soft and very easily ruined. The correct tool, clearely shown in the Haynes manual, acts against the bottom diff side cover bolt head, which is a strong point, and any improvised tool must do the same. A 1/2" socket on the bolt head (smaller hexagon on late models?) and a large tyre lever often works.

You should ideally not seperate the inner part of the pot joints, unless you first pull back the rubbers and mark the parts with paint or Tippex so that they go back the same way, as for any parts which have been run together for a while. Putting them back randomly increases wear, and often the balls fall out and get mixed up. THEY DO NOT INTERCHANGE between pot joints, they are selectively assembled to get correct running clearance, and the several different manufacturers of pot joint used different internal dimensions anyway, so do try to keep matching parts together.

The shafts came out with hand force, so not issues.  I am keeping the hardware from the respective sides separate.

Rocket, wow, the mini encyclopedia is awesome!  I'm taking my car to bits for a full restoration, and it probably won't be reassembled before two years have passed.  This reference will be invaluable to help me ensure everything goes back correctly.  Many thanks for your assistance.

If the shafts just pulled out check if there are circlips present in the grooves on the ends of the output shaft. If not get some, but ideally they will be replaces anyway. Or do you mean the outer part of the joint is still in the diff? If the end of the shaft looks like a large 5 pointed star you have split the pot joint.
