On a modern scale, you'll need a hot hatch to be as fun as the mini is, in terms of cornering and drivability. Lower models are bit bland and roll through corners etc.
Thought about a different classic as a daily? mk2 golf is a good choice, afew of us on here have had a golf alongside a mini.

I would probably prefer another classic

ax gt is fun but poorly built and rust like mad, 205 gti is awsome, and the old xr2 or xr2i is quite fun, then really its the golf gti. go for one of these and it should put a smile on your face.
or you can go for the newer fester st.
thats what i would go for if you want a fun cheap daily run around.
Actually thats a lie i would go for an alfa 147 but thats just me i love the alfa's.
whats your budget?

Mini or Metro.. No Jap or eurobox will ever fit the bill

As modern cars go it's the closest to the Mini feel I've found. The 'Sport' button increases throttle response but more importantly it weights up the steering, without it pressed the steering is too light for my tastes.
