Hello all,

I am a new member here and the proud owner of a '92 Cooper!

As a total noob, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what type of carb I have.

I think its a HIF4, (1 1/2" am I right with that?)

I am looking to upgrade to a stage 1 kit for some extra power, so would be good if I would pick the brains of the experts around here.

The car used to be SPI, but I believe the previous owner changed this to a carb based Metro engine. I include a pic of the head as well. Anyone able to shed light on this too?

Many thanks,

Gavin

Hard to say for certain from those photos but to me it looks like an HIF44.  The difference externally (so you can see without having to take the thing off and measure it) is the shape of the flange the air filter is fixed to.  The 44 has a squared top half to the flange while the 38 is more triangular.  I don't think it's an HIF4, the imperial sized HIFs weren't made for long and were never fitted to the Mini or Metro range.  They were used in MGs and things.  They do of course work in Minis but you don't see them fitted often as the real advantage of them is that they are available in pairs whilst the more common metric ones aren't.  To me this looks like a later metric carb, but the larger of the two.

Huge thanks for your replies guys.

I've taken another look (see below) and based lrostoke's photo, it looks like its a HIF44.

Does this shed any light on the engine type?

Most likely a 1275 , especially considering you say it started life as a 92 injection

It still has an engine number plate on it.  Engine numbers tell you about the engine.

There is a small plate at the front of the engine that says 12HE25 139949

(I think, quite worn down)

Any ideas?

Looking at the Guessworks list on the following thread your engine is a Metro with 9.4:1 compression.

Yes, looks like it is an A+ 1275cc Metro.

That's really cool, thanks guys. Any idea of the sort of horse power I should expect to get from this, and the increase in performance I might get with a stage 1 kit?

it looks like it has a stage 1 kit fitted already from the pics of the engine bay.

Thanks Yams,
How can I tell if a stage 1 kit has been fitted already?
