Hi all

In Australia all our minis are essentially a mk1 shell and so all windscreens (front and rear) will fit every model produced here (ie 61-78).

Dad has a Japanese import 1998 spi rover cooper sportpack. The other day a large rock cracked his windscreen and it now needs replacing.

I think this is a mk7. So are all front windscreens throughout mini production the same?

So would a mk1 front windscreen from a morris mini fit this Rover mini (I know windscreen rubbers differ)?

Also the rear view mirror is attached to this windscreen, is it just a matter of getting some glue and gluing it back on or is there something moulded into the windscreen to attach it to

Its all covered by insurance so it doesn't matter about cost :)

The MPI screen is thicker and uses a different seal. the mirror boss is apparently moulded in, but I'm sure you could find a stick on mirror off another vehicle if you had to opt for the older pattern glass.

Thankyou for the reply Ethel

Is it only thicker because it is laminated? (only Aussie Cooper S and clubman GT got laminated windscreens)

No don't have to settle for old pattern glass as insurance company is having to source a windscreen.

Initially when contacted they contacted a windscreen place who then contacted Dad and said "yeah we got mini windscreens, Dad then explained to them that is was an import Rover mini" and they then got a little worried and realised it wasn't a normal Aussie mini and said "oh that's going to be expensive"

So I was curious.

Are you sure it's an SPi? Over here only MPis have the mirror stuck to the screen.

In answer to your question, I've had a non laminated screen in my SPi before. Fits fine, just explodes when your own wheel hits it :/

The bodyshell aperture is the same throughout production so you can use any Mini windscreen with the correct rubber seal for its thickness.......I think the later MPi screen was thicker to meet later safety regulations and as said you can fit the mirror whichever way you prefer with a suitable adhesive or mirror sticky pad, etc.

Always fit laminated glass windscreen......toughened glass shatters and is potentially dangerous in an accident.

Ok that's what I wanted to know. All windscreens appatures are the same.

Oh yeah toughened glass really does go bang when they smash. Happened to my brother when he was driving.

Yes mirror is stuck to the glass. It is spi, Japanese 98 model (radiator at the side like every other mini, I believe mpi have the radiator at the front?)

Thankyou for your help

It's neither an SPi or Mpi then, it's J spec (OK, yes it has SPi fuelling but that's about it).

The screen is thicker for something to do with the airbag but I have never found out exactly what.
