The PO of my car, that's who.

So, I'm still a bit perplexed because the guy had the roof painted white during his ownership but he left the silver pin stripes on it... and clearcoated over the ones on the front fenders.

That's right - just the front fenders.  The rest of the stripes are not clear coated.

So I've got a set of white stripes that my wife is giving me for Christmas (not really sure if she knows that or not) and I'm wondering how to go about fitting them.   I suppose the easiest solution would be to just line up the new stripe over the old stripe - but will that look stupid?

How would I remove vinyl under clear coat? Score the paint along the edges of the stripe then buff it smooth (smoothe)?

If you really wanted to do a perfect job, sand it all off, repaint it, then put the stripe on. Defiantly wouldn't put it over the existing one though. Not sure about the score method, because you could damage the paint underneath.

I'd just stick it over the top if its been clear coated, you'd be hard pushed to tell as long as it's either the same width or slightly wider to cover the old pin stripe

Thats why you should never lacquer over decals.

Unfortunately, this is a common procedure..

Ah and as you remove the stripes you'll see that the whole bonnet requires new paint..

happens alot in the repair business, dont remove the stripe (this costs profit) and flick in the colour and clear coat the complete panel, can be a royal pain, happens alot with motorbike graphics too

Daft!  Why didn't he just get them painted on then cleared over the top....!?  Thats what I did and cant feel the edge of the silver as a result.

If it were me, i would be taking the old ones off and repainting the bonnet.  Then paint the stripes or use vinyls.
