Hi all,

I really want to give spraying my car at home a go. Which is the safest way without and air fed mask? I'm quite happy to fork out for an exensive mask, but cant do air fed for a few reasons. So which is the safest? So long as the paint job will last a few years I'll be quite chuffed

Cheers,
Nathan

Do not use 2 pack with out a proper extractor and proper mask. It really is very poisnous! Water based is going to be safest but you will still need to wear a mask and make sure the paint is containted and doesn't re paint next doors house garden and car!

Safest is Cellulose for a home jobby.

There are 3 main types of paint;

Cellulose
2k (2 pack)
And basecoat and clear

2k and base and clear are different paints. 2k dries glossy and is tough and hard wearing. Base and clear is a basecoat applied thinly in layers. Once the colour is even (2-3 coats) 2k lacquer is applied. The lacquer is poisonous as is 2k paint. The hardener has isocyanate in which will poison you if used in correctly.

Cellulose can be painted with a normal filter mask.

Hope this helps?

Haha, I'm happy to get an expensive mask etc, and my garage is seperate from the house so not a problem regards everything else. So water based 2 pak is the safest of options then?

Ignore the last post. Perfect thanks, explains it great. I know about the iso risks, and have used my dads air fed mask with 2k paints before. Also found the extractor fans work in my garage :D So will go the safer route I think. My health comes first. Cheers ;)

Unless you have the facilities, oven etc... you'll struggle with water based paints so I've heard.

2 pack is way to dangerous without an air fed mask, and even if you did have one your neighbours could be affected. When I was spraying mine with celly, the fumes were really strong outside the garage, but cellulose doesn't have the same health risks as 2 pack - but it's still bad stuff to breath in

Cellulose isn't the most hard wearing of paints or the shiniest, but nothing that a buff couldn't cure. I figured I'd rather have a un shiny car until I buffed it, than breathing apparatus when I'm older.

The biggest problem that I found with painting in a garage is the temperature. I needed a minimum of 15 degrees to get a good coat without it running. I tried it at 10 once and it just ran off the car.

The mask that I am using is a 3M mask with charcoal filters that knock out the most of the nasties.

Hope this helps:

Yes you can paint waterbased and solvent basecoat at home but the lacquer it requires it 2k which is poisonous.

I had this same problem with painting my car, I ended up using 2k direct gloss with an airfed mask and a compliant spraygun to minimise over spray. I have tried cellulose before and don't like it due to common reaction problems and amount of coats required. A box fan with a paint booth filter on it is effective for removing paint mist. When I paint my next one I think I will try water basecoat and clear 2k, but another safe option without airfed is water basecoat and upol 1k smart clear I have used it on spot repairs in the past and it's quite good.

Apologies! I was always told that you needed it to be roasting to get to evaporate.

Your paint job looks brill!

Out of interest how hot did you have to get the garage?

Cheers,
Ian

Hmm, so celly is still the safest bet.

Out of curiosity, will 2k solid top coat go on top of 1k primers?

Not really ideal, the solvent will soften the 1k primer and will craze/crack. Need to use either 2k or celly really so they are compatible.

2k was designed to go over most paints / primers without reaction, so using 2k over 1k primer should be fine.
water based paint is air dried and only needs air flow to dry but the clear coat is 2k and should be used with some heat.
the fourth option you have is synthetic paint.

I have used 2k direct gloss over upol p88 high build primer before I changed to 2k primer and it was fine, cellulose has a high thinner content and reacts with almost everything which is why I changed, it even reacted with the 3m red stopper I used so I changed to 2k primer after this and had no issues since.
