With Christmas leave coming up I want to be able to get about by car instead of moped since the car is warmer ;) But can't find anywhere that seems to do temp insurance for 17yo, just 18
- Is there anywhere that provides it?

I think it's unlikely, maybe a pay as you go policy is worth looking at?

No, temp cover is usually a minimum of 25......

Thought that would be the case, the cheapest quote I've found for a year is £1100 which compared to friends and my brother is cheap but for the amount of time I'll have to drive it becomes expensive, how does the PAYG set up work?

Not 100% sure. Essentially you pay in monthly installments, depends on the cancellation, or suspension, penalties if it'd be worthwhile. An alternative might be to get a relative to insure it and add you as a temporary driver for when you can use it, you'd also get year round fire & theft cover. That's assuming you can be added at your age, of course.

No you can't get it at 17 due to legal reasons (that's what my insurer told me). I tried.
If you have insurance on your moped ring them up and ask about having another vehicle added temporarily. I did this when my astra was off the road. I my sister's punto was added to my insurance for a month while I repaired the astra. I was 20 at the time though.
Alternatively just insure it for 12 months and pay it in monthly instalments. Once you go back just cancel your insurance. It will cost you more per month than if you paid it in one go and you will most likely have to pay an admin fee but it may be the only way.

Have you checked to see if any car hire companies will cover you at 17? A long shot but worth a try.
If so, you may be able to rent a car inc insurance etc, comparable to organising cover on a borrowed car.
