My windscreen washer is not working but my pump can be heard to fire, Yet there are is no water in the tubes. Can anyone suggest a way of checking if the pump is truly the problem before I pay for a replacement?

Managed to work out that the pump is pumping water but for some reason it won't enter the tubes. Someone suggested that there could be air further down the tubes but not sure how I could go about clearing these. Anyone had anything else like this?

Hi

try this

take the pipe off the pump

and blow down it

if its hard to blow down

there is a good chance that the jets are blocked

get a very small needle and poke it down the hole in the jet

that should unblock it

Work your way along the pipe from the pump.  You should find a none return valve, this stops fluid flowing back through the pipe back into the washer bottle when the pump isn't running, it means the water reaches the screen quicker.  This nrv is usually a small circular unit (similar to a black boiled sweet) & tends to fail/stick. It's has a small ball inside that is pushed back to block the pipe when the water tries to rush back into the bottle.  Remove the nrv and blow through it, you should be able to blow through it in one direction only.  If you can't blow either way it's knackered and should be replaced, they're pennies from Halfords.

I've just this weekend replaced the jets on mine. I was getting a dribble out of one jet and nothing on the other, I suspected the pump.  Having removed the pipe from the pump it was obvious the pump was working.  Problem seem to have been that the jet holes in the crap chrome ones fitted were too big so there was no pressure build up, so I had all the water dribbling weakly out of one jet and none getting to the other. New original fit jets and the system is great.

Just take the hose off the pump and see if it pushes a stream of water out (watch your electrics). if not or its really weak new pump if it does then blockage somewhere.

Thanks for the input, tested the pump without the no return valve and it shot the water right out. Tried blowing through the valve as suggested but it wouldn't move. So looks like i'm off to Halfords for a new valve.
