Mrs B has given me a Machine Mart voucher to get a heater for the garage on the proviso that it's not electric. So I thought a new gas heater is a perfect idea - like this one:

However, this little so and so runs on Butane. Which nobody but caravan shops seems to stock in Ipswich. At the risk of being seen in one of these establishments and having to spend an additional £50-odd to get a small butane cylinder, would it be better to use a Propane heater such as this?

And will it attach to the the Propane cylinder I have for my BBQ?

Before I say this I would like to make it clear I am not 100% sure but every heater/ cooker I have come across that runs on butane will also run on propane and vice versa. Usually the only difference is the regulator. machine mart technical section are very helpful so it might be worth giving them a ring and ask.

I had a feeling they would; however I'd rather not rip apart a brand new fire to change the regulator in case something goes wrong or I make it leak and blow my garage, the project, me and my Jaffa Cakes up. :D

The guy in Machine Mart wasn't very helpful but he wasn't from that store. I will speak to them tomorrow :proud:

Output - burning either is carbon dioxide and plenty of water vapour. If the garage is dry you'll quickly add to moisture in the garage atmosphere.

Should just be a matter of unscrewing a jubilee clip or similar on the gas pipe. Phone up the technical dept, the instore people are often worse than useless in my experience.

i use a propane heater in my garage and usually only have it on for 1/2 hour or so just to take the chill off,   but as stated they will produce a fair bit of moisture if ran for longer periods.

Well, I went and had a look at both; neither will work with my BBQ cylinder due to screw fittings rather than pushing on with a hose clip. I bit the bullet and bought the Propane heater & got myself a new cylinder.

Now just got to get into the garage to unpack it and start using it - but first I need more Jaffa Cakes!! :P

Hi, use propane, as a butane cylinder won't vapourise if its really cold outside. Propane is good all year round but butane only works spring, summer and autumn.

Plus it's usually cheaper ( i think)
