Nice car, definitely like the 10" wheels without arches!

Thanks Risky! I like the look of the 850's with the standard narrow body.

The car didn't seem to like the wash, and when I was driving a section of the chrome side trim under the door flew off on the highway. By all accounts it's a tricky job to bend a new piece to fit each side so I'm not looking forward to that!

The small amount of progress on the 1100 engine for September was the installation of the valve springs. The bottom collars went on first, then the stem seals and the double springs, caps and retainers. The spring compressor was the cheapest one on eBay (under $25 delivered) and thankfully it worked well enough to get them all installed.

I've got all the studs installed after cleaning out the threads with my new tap & die set. I have a couple of sets of rocker arms I need to have a look through and figure out which ones to use. I suspect the engine will go much better with some high lift rockers but I'll talk to the expert and see what he recommends. The head can now go on the "done" shelf for now and I'm hoping to get the gearbox assembled next as I think I have the majority of the parts to finish it..

I've been really happy with the new KN cone filter so far. It gives a nice little extra bit of noise and makes the engine bay look a lot tidier too. The intake noise is sorted for the moment so the next item on the list is the exhaust. The exhaust has always been hard to hear from the inside of my car over the noise of everything else, and I've found the twin box RC40 to be pretty quiet. The original plan was to remove the centre muffler and just use the single rear muffler, but a secondhand system has come up so I'll see what we can make work.

So yesterday was a pretty full on day!

We started in the morning with a couple of minis and went for a drive and had some nice coffee. It was actually nice and sunny despite the recent rain we've had.

The afternoon was planned to install James old exhaust as we knew it sounded great on his car (he is putting a bigger exhaust on to suit the supercharger now). We pulled the car up on the ramps and put the rear on jack stands and left the car to cool for a little bit during lunch. This is a really nice height to work on the car too, I don't know why I don't use the ramps more often!

Removing the old RC40 exhaust only took 10 minutes. My old one is the RC40 twin box on top. The one going on the car is the Maniflow RCM/Lukey muffler on the bottom. If I'd had an extra day with the exhaust I would have cleaned it up and painted it, but it will have to do for now. His old pipe that connects the LCB to the centre pipe had a boss for the O2 sensor, but unfortunately it was too short to fit with my freeflow manifold.

Here is a photo of the exhaust all done. It looks pretty similar from the outside but it has a nicer note now and is louder too! This was probably only 30 minutes of work all up

With the day progressing so well and a couple of hours remaining in the day we thought we'd start on the next stage... So, out comes the trusty old SU HS4

In it's place went a Dellorto DHLA 40 on a Warneford intake manifold. I also had to change the rocker cover as it was interfering with the throttle cable.

45298566541_566b2607fa_b.jpg

I had swapped out the old 36mm chokes with some smaller 32mm chokes. We went through the stash of Dellorto jets and put in the smallest/leanest ones we had.

45298557491_5f65920403_b.jpg

We did a couple of laps around and the spark plugs looked perfect. After checking over everything we did a longer drive and there was no surging or backfiring or anything so we called the day a success! In the next week or so we can get the O2 sensor on the car and check what the mixture is like.

I was able to get my insulation blanket back on the firewall too

44583522234_9ac33f3ed8_b.jpg

For now:

Exhaust sounds much louder and has a really nice note

Car still starts as easily as before

The Dellorto makes all kinds of awesome noises

The car may or may not be faster, but it definitely feels and sounds faster!

I like where you're going with this  =] What filtration setup are you going for on that carb?

Great, sounds like you got on just fine with the Dellorto.

Good looking car!  :gimme:

Plan A was these long ram tubes, but they are way too long!

There is enough room there for some short ram tubes (15-25mm), but I'm currently not decided on what I'll do, but I don't want to modify the firewall at all.

This Ramflo was used previously with the Dellorto on a 1275 which made much more power than my car. It should just squeeze in, and actually filter out dust

Thanks! It turned out even better than I was hoping!

The sound and feel of the car are way more important than actual speed :) Looks good with the crackle black rocker cover and the dellorto.

That Ram-Flo filter looks pretty good. I wonder if it'll fit. Bit of a tight squeeze.

Yep, it is definitely a lot more fun to drive now! I will get a video of the noise when the sun comes out again

It did fit on the 1275 previously, but he wasn't using a mechanical speedo cable. I'll try and fit it in and see how I go, otherwise I'll try something else

It was a really productive day, I think it was under 4 hours (including a 1 hour trip to 3 parts shops for a couple of things) from start to finish. It took less time than putting the stage one kit on in the first place!

Timmy, what length is your manifold?

It’s a 3.75” manifold. They’re now made by Redline as the 12-3005 manifold. Redline apparently improved the casting since buying out the Warneford moulds

Here is a quick video of a start up and rev. It has a really nice brap from the carb!

It's hard to tell if it's due to the extra noise, but it does feel like it picks up speed better and revs quicker to the redline limiter (which is very low due to the old valve springs). It's actually hard to hear the exhaust over the carb now, I will try driving the car with the bulkhead insulation blanket and see how it sounds then

At the moment the car is stuck in the garage. When I drove it last on Thursday the clutch was taking up really low and making it hard to select gears. I inspected the master and slave cylinders and they were weeping a very small amount but the fluid was high in the reservoir. After taking out the slave cylinder and looking under the dash I found that the R-clip (installed by someone before me) had come loose and fallen out, and so had the clevis pin! With the clevis pin missing it explained why nothing happened for the first 75% of the pedal stroke.

Slave cylinder had been leaking a very small amount of fluid, but the internal seals and bore looked good.
44679862834_e08fd5e296_b.jpg

The master cylinder was the same - leaking slightly but overall OK. It had been rebuilt in the past as it had PBR Australian made seals in it.
30475713297_6625ab4b7a_b.jpg

The giant clevis pin was under the carpet and looked like it'd been there for a while as it left a rusty imprint on the underlay. It will be replaced with a split pin.
