Quite liking those extra gauges where you have put them :)

Umm i just noticed the gauges too they look good

Thanks guys. I can't claim any credit though, my dad installed the gauges there in the 80's. They were originally a water temp, oil pressure and ammeter in three different brands. Now I've got a water temp, oil pressure and manifold vacuum, all with mechanical senders.

How are you going piecing together the 1100 for your mini?

How are you going piecing together the 1100 for your mini?

I've got:

A couple of engine blocks suitable for re-boring. Probably going +080 or +100 thou oversize.

A couple of cylinder heads suitable for new valves and porting. One 202 head looks almost brand new

A good crack checked and reground 1098 crank and an unknown spare I haven't pulled out of a motor yet

A 4 synchro remote box and three rod change boxes for parts

Rebuilt set of HS2 twin carbs and airbox with all the linkages. I've also got an HS6 if I decide to go single carb

A cam away for grinding.

Still need to buy the pistons, engine and gearbox rebuild kits and I'll probably need a disc brake kit too!

I haven't been spending much money on it recently as we've recently moved into our new house. If I didn't have to pay the mortgage for a couple of months I could have it all finished... The old 998 has been running like a champ recently too, so I'm a bit hesitant to pull it out  :D

I've got the hilo kit to go in next, hopefully I can do that this month...

Are you going to run the cooper s brakes or the cooper setup so you don't have to add flares?

I did have a set of front hubs and drive flanges from a Cooper. I ended up selling them as I didn't think it was worth the time and money to get them working again. By the time I replaced the wheel bearings, ball joints, discs, calipers, etc I'd end up with brakes not much better than what I have now. I think I'll just buy another set of wheels to suit the disc brakes when that time comes.

How does you mini go with the all drum brakes? Do you have any problems with pulling up straight and in enough space?

The drums brake are perfectly fine for the car at the moment. I haven't had any issues or fading driving the car in normal traffic or mini runs. They just need to be adjusted up every now and then.

I've read your post a few times and I've enjoyed it and found it informative as well. I've got a Mini K and trying to rebuild it on a budget rebuilding the drum brakes is cheaper than upgrading to Cooper S discs is a lot more expensive.

I'll be definitely be upgrading the brakes when I do the engine. I drove a mini with a booster and discs over the weekend, and the difference is huge, especially when you have more power. The best price for a disc conversion I've seen in Australia is at Karcraft, and they are about $970. It's much cheaper buying it as a full kit than in pieces.

That is a very good price for the conversion kit. Does that include everything that you require to change from drums to discs?

That's the price for the minispares brand calipers (as of the start of the year). Getting a set delivered from the UK is approx $1080 now the dollar has gone down...

I've been checking out a few different suppliers and Minispares to my door for their kit is about that price. I will have to track down my copy of the Karkraft catalogue again and check them for pricing. DSN were a little bit cheaper for their kit but they were out of stock.

I'd been looking for some wheel caps for the alloy wheels. I found some Ford ones at the wreckers which looked like they should fit..

They fitted pretty well, they just need some new logos and a polish up.
20686763862_301c51e776_b.jpg
I started installing the Hilo kit I bought too. I'm doing the rear first just to level it out a bit, and I'll put the front ones in later when I get some new rubber cones.
19319425416_2f7a598938_b.jpg
I started on the right side and it was very straightforward, except for the nylon cup in the arm which took ages to get out. It came out in many pieces, the largest one being this one. It hadn't worn through, which is a good sign.
20911453266_ef0d14fc0a_b.jpg
Here is the right side done
20709267391_c220776cf3_b.jpg
The left side was a bit more challenging as the tank needed to be moved to get to the shock. What most guides don't mention is that early tanks have a long drain valve at the bottom... Luckily mine had been trimmed short enough to get a socket on as stock they are pretty long! http://minikingdomon...tube-fuel-tank/ . It's tucked right up near the rear exhaust hanger too, so it's a pain to get to..
20750936049_17e1df3c77_b.jpg
I got the drain valve off and the fuel was only slowly dripping out, so I slid the tank over and put the valve back in.

The rear cones on both sides are in pretty good nick too, they still have glossy paint! They will need replacing at some stage as they're the original Moulton/Dunlop ones
20315075814_4dbebd291d_b.jpg
The left nylon cup came out in one piece, along with a bunch of ancient road dirt and mud from the subframe
20315077334_b310990e46_b.jpg
Here is the stock trumpet against the new hi-lo. I got the left side in and did a quick height adjustment to get it reasonably level. They'll need a little adjusting once they bed in properly.
20316653063_42eb04f717_b.jpg
I then had to move the tank back over and secure it in place. I undid the drain valve again, but this time the slow drip had turned into a fast stream. I ended up draining the tank completely as I couldn't get the valve back in from the bottom without getting covered in petrol...

I pushed the car out to give it a quick wash to get rid of the spilled petrol and I heard a little scrape
20315080554_040cdeed90_b.jpg
The exhaust is now scraping on our tiny driveway! It's due to the fact I had to tweak it a bit to get the exhaust pipe to miss arcing on the floor start button. I might have to get some exhaust wrap or something so I can push it up a bit higher safely...

I'm booked in for a big car show on Sunday, so I'll get some pictures then if all goes to plan!
