Hi All,

I bought a 1991 Rover Mini Cooper a few months ago as a project to restore. It already had a sportex exhaust system fitted which sounds awesome and it was a nippy little thing. I noticed that when cold the car used to judder badly when cold when accelerating pretty hard. I was told I needed to get a new air filter to accommodate the extra air the exhaust was needing, so go the k&n cone. I noticed a power increase immediately. However the juddering is still there, and appears to only be when full throttling the car in 3rd and 4th gear. It gets to around 2500 revs and the car judders, shakes and splutters until I release the pedal. However, if I gradually press the accelerator, the car builds up speed fine until around 4000 revs in 3rd or 4th and the car begins to judder as it would before. 1st and 2nd gear are fine for a bit, but after the engine has warmed up a bit, they also judder after a while.

I have a HIF44 carb on the car, and I’ve got the service kit ready to place onto the carb along with a new needle and spring as required for stage one tuning.

I've also got new contacts and condenser to go onto the distributor with a new cap too.

Is there anything I could be missing that could be causing this before I start work on the carb and distributor with the above parts?

Cheers :)

Hi Paddy,

Mine was exactly the same when I bought it!  Has the car been stood for a while before you bought it or was it in regular use?  Sounds like you have a bit of a mis-fire when the engine is under load.  Have you checked the plugs and plug leads?

Cheers

Em x
