In view of the increasing number of rear end shunts on Mini's....this looks like a neat solution.

If you haven't got a high level LED rear brake light fit one asap in the rear window.....drivers are so used to seeing these now on nearly all cars that under certain conditions the Minis rear brake lights down low get missed by inattentative drivers busy watching their sat navs and smartphones......they were made compulsary on new cars and the very last batch of classic Mini's some years ago because they cut down on rear ending collisions.

Classic MINI High Level Brake Light

mini-led-light_zpsd09dd1c9.jpg

This High Level Brake light fits classic Minis only.

The Brake light contains 33 Hyperbright RED LEDs which emit around the maximum allowed for brake lights.

The LEDs are special wide beam LEDs to emit light over the angle required by the legislation.

Current control uses 11 resistors allowing the unit to work over a wide voltage range - unlike some cheap brake lights.

The moulding is shaped to fit the internal contour of the rear screen. Industrial grade sticky pads are included.

Easily fitted in minutes, instructions and connectors included.

Carefully made by hand in the West Midlands

Low footprint minimises blocking of rear view.

Can be fitted at top or bottom of screen.

LEDs come to full brightness up to 1/5 of a second faster than incandescent bulbs. That is over 11 feet at 75mph !

Add this to my list. I want to get hold of the clubman front side lights as well.

I started to make my own - not sure if I'll use it yet as it isn't entirely legal, but it only cost around $17.00 (~10 pound)

It's designed to look like one of those F1/motorsport rain lights

15 ultra bright red LEDs $9.00

Black jiffy box $2.95

Some reistors $0.44

Scrap aluminium for facia free

circuit board $4.95

I have a feeling that high level lights spelling out words have been ruled illegal, I seem to remember there were product recalls and prosecutions in another marque of car.  I'll see if I can find anything about it.

Can't find what I was thinking about right now, but I have found they are illegal in most countries and I do seem to remember either Rover or Mini Spares deleting a logo brake light from their accessory catalogue during the twin point era.  It seems they actually make the very type of crash that a high level brake light is designed to avoid, far more likely to happen.  For the same reason that Police cars with 'STOP' lighting up in the rear window get hit at roundabouts quite a lot.  People get distracted by the wording and it makes the reaction time slower.

The Dodge Viper had a light up Viper badge (if you look at the Viper logo upside down it looks like Daffy Duck)

My grandpa used to work for a company that made suspension seats for trucks and trains and things and they also did a batch of high mount brake lights.

I've never like the 'mini' 3rd brake lights as personally I think they look a bit tacky. I however have had a 3rd brake light fitted for a number of years at the top of the screen, but fitted in such a way as it's almost invisible/discreet when not lit.

Still didn't stop it from being revered into while parked up in the middle of the day though.

Well seeing as its not road legal I won't bother with the classic mini high level brake light plus the more I think about it I feel its a bit tacky (sorry) I do however like the idea of a 3rd brake light so I will invest in a road legal one :-)

I just got one of these: http://www.ebay.co.u...cvip=true&rt=nc

5 quid and it has a strobe function for tracks. I will mount it to the top of the screen as it's pretty useless being at the bottom. No idea what it'll look like.

Mine is one of these...

I can't exactly remember what I paid for it being as it must have been around 2006 ish, but it certainty wasn't more than a tenner from a local motor factors. As for how it's fitted, its screwed directly into the inner rail along the top of the rear window with the wiring all fed behind the headlining and down the c pillar to the o/s rear light. Wiring it up is simply a case of taking a feed from the o/s brake light and an earth.

I dont like adding a third brake light to a classic car, it looks tacky and spoils the look.

But these times, with those new big and higher cars, and high level brake light its becoming a must-have safety feature.
