How To Identify A Real Cooper 998Cc Engine?

New in the forum and also new In mini ownership.
I ve have bought a 1971 Innocenti Cooper MK3 with the 998cc cooper engine.
It was a project car and I am just about to start the full restoration.
The thing is that I have doubts about the engine originality. It came with the correct engine plate number 9FJ/XE/H.... but with the block painted in red and with just one single carburator.
How could I identify if it is the correct 998 cooper engine?
Innocentis coopers (except the 1300) were all coming with the 998cc Morris Cooper engines from UK
If the car has finally a newer 998 engine (Metro or Rover one) what would be the necessary work to do to make it period correct cooper engine?
I already have bought the correct twin 1 1/4 SU carburators.

Welcome to the forum, if you are able to upload any pictures of the engine that would help identification.

The Innocenti 998 engines were built to Cooper spec in mk 2 and 3 had Morris rocker covers and had the engine identification numbers became 9FJ/SA/H until the change to 4 sped syncro gearboxes and this gave new engine numbers of 9FJ/XE/H and the engines were painted green. The engines were built at Coventry to Innocentis spec and had a AEA630 camshaft comp ratio of 9:1 and 56bhp at 5800rpm, the engines otherwise were identical in all other parts

Would be logical to change the color of the block?

Now I am going to open the engine. Is there anything (number, mark,...) on the block or inside it that could tell me if it is the right engine?

A close up shot of the engine number tag would show if it is the original.

If you take off the rocker cover then check the number of the head casting, an original 'good guy' cooper 998 head will have 12G295 numbers cast in.

Is this number only related to the cooper 998cc?
Now I will open the rocket cover and check if there is a number in the head casting.
Many thanks to everybody.
This is the spirit of these forums. A big source of information to share with who doesnt know.

The numbers you gave me (block and main cast) are matching with my car engine.
Could I say the engine is an original cooper one?
The point is that at the same time I am starting restoration, I am also in the process of historical car registration. When the engineer came to inspect the car, looking at the single carburator and the block color, he commented in his report about doubts that the car would have its original engine.
With the matching numbers I ve found I will apply to cancel those doubts on the report.
To support more this claim, is there any other number I could check?
Has somebody a table with the 998 cooper egine data and parts numbers to scan for me and attach it together with the photos I have? In the books I have, there is not such detailed info.
Many thanks in advance.

Either lift the head -or use an endoscope to look inside the bore - and if it has the raised D pistons it's definitely a Cooper engine.
