This advert is dated 1958.......there were also earlier versions of the Bond Minicar dating back to 1949, interesting to think Bond were so close to using the name 'Mini' for a small car long before BMC.........?

There was also a 'Minivan' version introduced in 1952.

My dad learnt to drive in a minicar C. Very few left now, they were either ali so scrapped due to the value, or fibreglass so fell apart. They must be scary as hell to drive on modern roads. A 998 Mini is bad enough!

I know of one with a hard top on rotting on a driveway, it's hideous!

Matt.

Many years ago when I was just starting to get interested in cars, especially 'old' cars, I was offered a Bong Bug for £100 as a rolling chassis... Everything was there that should've been, except for the engine and gearbox as that got removed and somehow lost....?

Was planning on fitting a MG Metro Turbo engine into it, but Dad said no.... so it never got bought... dunno whatever happened to it...

Ah, yes, the Bond Bug! It was styled by Ogle Designs who did the Ogle Mini.

A friend of mine (a Mini enthusiast) who had an auto-cross Mini 1275 was a senior guy there and he had one on test which he invited me to drive as part of the testing.

I described it as the 'ultimate wedge of terminal understeer' in the wet, and a 'rollover looking for somewhere to do so in the dry'.

With a Metro Turbo engine, as suggested above, it would have gone even more quickly either straight on at the first corner, or straight onto its roof. Anyway, there would soon have been one less (hooray)  ;D.

The Ogle Mini is where I think Austin got its design from for the Allegro....

That's an interesting thought. One can see the similarity, but I don't think Ogle design had any input to the All-agro styling.

The Allegro was a nice looking car. What a pity it was such a poor car to own and drive. The Vanden Plas with that silly looking grille was something else though.

Ogle Design, based in Letchworth, did some very interesting work. They did the original Reliant Scimitar styling, plus the project Lucas Electric Taxi in 1974. David Ogle, who started the company, was sadly killed in an Ogle Mini on the A1 just north of Hatfield.

I will defend the Austin Allegro bec et ongles (en français dans le texte). I was responsible for the Allegro Launch (in 1973-74 ???) for British Leyland Belgium. We corrected the Hydrolastic suspension before the launch, we got rid of the Morris Marina overstock in the dealers network (another model which deserved a better success) and I made a launch package for the Dealers network. After this I started the launch of the Triumph Dolomite Sprint with an ambitious racing program (inspiring other countries such as France and Nederland. When Jean-Pierre Jaussaud (winner of the 24 Hours of Le mans) said that the greatest race in all his life was in Pau with a Dolo Sprint he made my day. I will never regret my work for BL in the seventies. It was my best time in business. I am sure that with another management (I never was able to cope with Lord Stokes) BL would probably still exist today. Seneffe was the best assembly plant of the BL Group.

In the next few months I will move for the rest of my life to co. Kerry, Ireland and start a small collection of BMC and Leyland cars. I will be back in my twenties again.

Mich' the Belgian.
