made a quick and nasty tool to knock them out, behind the bearing is a gap, hook of the tool gets in the gap ..
insert from opposite end to bearing you are removing

Yes, it's called a bearing puller...
this'll do the job plus quite a few others...

Proper tools are the only way to go if you can get hold of them,

The problem with the proper tool is £70 is a lot of money to spend on a tool that will only be used once or twice. It seems my toolbox is full of such tools (cone compression and clutch oil seal tools come to mind) .
There are lots of ways of removing bearings without the proper tool that do just as good a job. Have a search on here for top arm bearing removal.

Bearing pullers are readily available, if a bit expensive. They are not specific to the Mini, as needle rollers are used in many places. Don't bother with the slide hammer type, as a very tight bearing (common on Minis) needs something more powerful. Or, get a slide hammer type and be prepared to fit some kind of spacer and nut so you can apply a more positive pull
See here for lots of pulling equipment:

This shows how to use it and what bits, such as the counterstay, you need:

Or Amazon do a set:

This article by Timken shows several techniques for different situations:

This bodge may work:

Here are some "proper" tools:

Finally, this shows the bearings on a rear radius arm being extracted, exactly the same principle.

As always, Google will get you the answers quicker than any forum. Try searching for "bearing extractor" or "internal bearing puller" etc

This looks like a very simple way to do it.
I am planning a total front suspension rebuild and have bought some M7 x 22mm washers to see if this works ....
