Hi all,

Any one give me a few pointers on the easiest way to remove the engine (93 cooper spi)

I've  removed exhaust, gear linkage, starter motor, radiator, alternator, engine steadies and gear box. It's just the drive shaft removal I'm not sure about. O_O is it a case of splitting the top joint and pulling out ?

I have a crane and stand for the engine and lifting brackets but do you need an engine stand adapter for the engine O_O

The inner pot joints are retained in with a circlip on the spline and the removal tool fits between the pot joint and the diff casing and is struck with a hanner to overcome the clip, you can do it with a lever though being aware of where you lever against. Removal of the top/bottom ball joint to get the shaft out, and secure hub assembly up so to protect the brake hose.

Mini Spares make the tool again, or a version of it here http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=36467

This is what the factory tool looked like and how to use it

Hi

We have a 1972 mini and I read somewhere that the drive shafts on these older cars don't 'pop' out with the lever / special tool but that the rubber boot needs to be removed exposing some nuts to undo - is that correct?

Cheers

Sorry but just so we are all clear, when you are referring to the drive shaft here, what part is it you are looking at?  What are you wanting to do here (eg, remove the engine or change a CV or ???).

Pot Joints didn't come in until 1973 in the UK, it should have Rubber Universals, but I'm not exactly sure what part ajac8 is referring to.

true but if the New poster is referring to the picture as theirs being the same. Otherwise as we know it is totally different.

Hi Thanks for the replies.

We are removing the 1275 engine to refurb the bay and do some preventative maintenance.

Ours looks like the diagram with the shaft from the hub through a rubber boot attached to a silver then the diff housing but I'm was unsure if the pre 73 type looks the same? Sounds like someone has changed them since it left the factory?

We are trying the separate the pot from the diff housing with leverage but they will not budge!

A tip I read on here, so can't claim it as my own.

Get a 1/2" socket, and put it on one of the diff side cover bolts. Get a bolster chisel and use the socket as a pivot. Give the handle of the chisel a sharp tap towards the diff, and it should pop off.

I've done it and it worked like a charm.
