Possibly Just Crap Floating Around In My Fuel Tank?

The only connection I can make is it's a fuel tank related issue as this always happend when I'm down to about my last £7 in the tank then when I fill it up it happens again but the day after it will run perfectly again! My guess is maybe crap in the tank that's rising to the top? Plus I bought a new fuel sender unit n that doesn't seem to work either :/ I did check the wiring before I had the unit fitted seems fine!
Anyone else had this problem or have any ideas?!
Would appreciate your input :) thanks! X

Lets concentrate on one thing at a time, starting with the stuttering. It certainly seems to be affected when you fill the tank, so i wonder if the small filter on the pick up tube inside the tank is getting clogged up. and then when you fill up, it gets a wash and works for a while before clogging again. Also, you may have a fuel line failing under certain conditions. There is a simple way to see if you have a good flow of fuel from the tank!
Remove the fuel hose from the carb, Direct it into a bottle, remove the fat lead that goes from the Distributor to the coil, then get someone to crank the engine for about ten seconds and watch for a good strong continuous pulsing flow of fuel into the bottle. If it slows or stops then you have some sort of restriction. If the flow is good and strong, then it may be an issue with the carb float chamber, or carb.
If you notice any water bubbles in the bottle then you may need to flush the tank and carb, as water in your fuel will give similar issues to a blockage.
Hope this helps. and dont forget to put the HT lead back or it wont start, LOL

It could also be a worn jet flooding the carb after idling at the traffic lights or some minutes of cruising at certain revs, i'd reccomend to have it tuned first.

To start with put an inline fuel filter like this and run it for a few days. If this solves the problem then you can narrow it down to dirty fuel. If the problem still persists then its time to look at other things.
The filter should cost £3 - £4 from a motor factor

A see through fuel filter under the bonnet will be more use for making any fuel starvation visible than making an improvement through filtering. There is a strainer on the end of the pick up the tank inside that could be clogged, but there are other possibilities. The height of the saloon tank means in can contribute a fair bit to the fuel pressure through a syphon effect when full, so it could be the pump, or just gunge anywhere further up the line. Giving the carb's float chamber a clean and resetting the float (check it's not punctured too) would be a decent start. You can blow back along the fuel line to try & unclog the tank strainer, but it's likely to clog again, if that's the problem, unless you remove & flush the tank; there are products available to coat the insides of flakey tanks. Another option is a blocked tank breather, easily checked by removing the filler cap for a test drive - not with a fuel tank or in the rain, obviously

We had this recently with one of the club members' car. The pick up in the tank was the issue and boy did it take some clearing. Tank removed, lots of xylene based carb cleaner and even more compressed air.
