Cant Engage Any Gears After Fitting Clutch

cant engage any gears after fitting clutch assembley onto crank, could this be catching on the primary gear

are the two big nuts away from the casing? i had this and i had to screw them out abit so i could get gears again.

The throw out is to be adjusted by 2 spanners. Crack the lock nut off. Wind them out. Have someone press the clutch down. Wind the inner nut flat with the casing. Release the pedal, then turn it an extra 2 FLATS not complete turns and tighten the lock nut against it. This will ensure it does not travel too far causing damage. Check these and report back.

It's a pre verto, we think the flywheel has gone further down the crank which is why I wondered if it would be now catching on the primary gear, was working fine before and have checked all nut adjustments and air in system

I had this problem after fitting a new clutch & flywheel (pre-verto). The solution that worked for me was to extend the clutch arm push rod. This was done with a female brake pipe fitting. Others have extended the push rod by welding some material. It was the only way I could get some clearance on the stop.

The flywheel is on a taper to the crank it cannot go to far. Check your clutch throw out and see how far the clutch mechanism is moving when you press the pedal. Have you tried bleeding the system?

If the flywheel is the same one there will be no possibility of the flywheel going on too far. It can happen with an out-of-tolerance after-market lightweight flywheel.

 

However, here it is again:

 

CLUTCH DRAG

Clutch drag or failure to disengage is not an uncommon problem with the Mini.

There are several possible causes as follows:

  1. HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
  1. Wear in the pedal spindle or failure of the pedal to master cylinder clevis pin.
  2. Failure of seals in the clutch master cylinder.
  3. ‘Ballooning’ of flexible hose due to internal hose degradation or damage
  4. Air in system due to inadequate bleeding
  5. Failure of slave cylinder seals

 

  1. MECHANICAL SYSTEM – WITHDRAWAL MECHANISM
  1. Wear in top clevis pin
  2. Wear in lower clevis pin
  3. Bent arm
  4. Worn or broken ball at lower end of arm where it engages into plunger.
  5. Wear in plunger ball seat.
  6. Incorrect setting of overthrow stop nuts
  7. Incorrect setting of adjusting screw (pre-Verto)
  8. Corrosion between plunger and clutch cover due to lack of lubrication.
  9. Thrust bearing failure – accompanied by a lot of noise.

 

  1. THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
  1. Failure of clutch diaphragm spring due to fatigue or distortion
  2. Centre plate hub not sliding on primary gear splines.
  3. Clutch plate surface de-laminating or breaking up
  4. Distorted clutch plate.
  5. If fitted, clutch plate shock springs broken and causing a ‘jam’.
  6. Primary gear not rotating freely on crankshaft due to either   i)   Insufficient primary gear end float,  ii)  Primary gear bushes seizing on crankshaft, or  iii) Primary gear bushes breaking up
