I recently bought a second hand Snap On (MT1261A) timing light but there was a rattle coming from the inductive pick up. I took it apart and the silver clip on the right of the photo fell out. I've tried to figure out where it's supposed to go without success. Any ideas?

Yeah I know but just wanted to know if anybody could give us a clue before I go down that road. Snap On don't have any exploded diagrams to reference.

from the looks of it the spring loaded bit that ususlly clamps over the ht lead isnt closing so i would assume its something to do with the spring mechanism

Send it off where? I have a rachet that has broken and the local snap on dealer who I didn't buy it from doesn't want to know

Cheers

David

Is it not a wire retaining clamp type thing?

If it works perfectly without it, throw it away and remove it from your thoughts forever....

Your Mini will present you with many, many more things to worry about....

You said that this is a second hand light and that the clamp works fine when put back together.

I believe it is working fine because that part has nothing to do with the light and is something its previous owner somehow managed to drop into the clamp assembly.

That part is a retaining ring commonly called an "X-washer" in the U.S.  They are used for mechanical assemblies, not electrical ones (typically).  I regularly see them used on parking brake actuating arms on Japanese and American cars as well as other assemblies.  The clip is placed on a metal shaft with a groove cut in it and pliers are then used to squeeze the legs of the clip together to secure the semi-circular cutouts in the clip in the groove.  I see no way/place for that clip to be used inside the light's pickup clamp assembly.

Not sure if the links will work but, the image below should show how this type of clip is typically used.

Top man! Very strange how it got in there...the unit didn't look like it had been opened before.
