Hi. Newbie here so excuse the amateurish question. I did search a few threads without success. Wife's electric power steering pump is failing and I'm going to have either a recon or salvaged unit fitted. I've had a quote for a salvaged model number HPSR50 - where do I look to see if that's the right spec for my wife's car? Cheers all.

Hello
The mini forum is mainly aimed at classic minis. You may have more success looking on websites like mini2.com which is dedicated to BMW MINIS.

Anyway I assume your car is an R56 version having electric power steering. The R50 version has a hydraulic power steering system.

The electric motor on an R56 mini is located physically on the steering rack. It's very difficult to see. Best bet is to access it from underneath or down the back of the engine once the engine cover is removed.

The hydraulic motor on an R50 is more or less in the same place. Again access from underneath is probably your best bet but I'm not 100% certain

Oops - so I was right with amateur! Actually the reg doc states that the variant is an RC32 which I'm having trouble finding, but I'll check out mini2.com as you suggest. Thanks for your help, Cheers, Paul.

Forgot to add - it was the mechanic who told me it was electric, but he may have said that based on his experience of other minis. I have a sneaky feeling this one is hydraulic.

There are three model codes for the first generation of BMW mini. R50 is the hatchback model and was for the Mini One and Cooper. The R53 was the Cooper S version and the R52 was the convertible.

If your car makes a loud whining noise when turning the wheel then you have a hydraulic power steering system. The pumps on these were always very noisy

The steering on the new mini's is a separate electric motor, driving a hydraulic motor. The unit comes as one and is only mounted on the rack not part of it.

If you are replacing it with a second hand part, be aware you could be replacing it again at your cost soon.

Use CHF11s fluid to refill the system

If you open the bonnet on the drivers side (england), there is the chassis plate that will tell you what model it is.
