Hiya guys, I thought I would take a look at my mini as I have been having problems with the engine getting hot,

Well I started off by having a look at the thermostat and I think the engine builder has put the thermostat in upside down,

Am I correct in saying this as after looking in the Haynes manual the thermostat is put in the other way around,

Yes, that is indeed fitted upside down!
One might wonder what else the so-called 'engine builder' has done wrong if he can make such a basic error!

If you didn't let it overheat it should be fine

i think 88 degrees is hottest. my engine was struggling to get warm with a 70 something so I fitted an 88... I noticed a loss of power and tone of the engine.

I've now opted for a 82 which seems alright, with the needle always half way up the gauge.

I'd recommend the Kligersil Gaskets.  Probably the best you can get for the thermostat housing.  :-)

Oh and on the subject of thermostats I'd only run a 74c on a race engine as max power from an a series is generated around 70c.  With a 74c thermostat in a road car the engine oil is not as likely to get up to a high enough temperature to boil of the contaminants i.e. water.

From the evidence that I have seen and speaking to the likes of Peter Vickers and AC Dodd the sweet spot for an Engine thermostat in the UK is 82c with the consensus to maybe swapping it to a 88c in the winter if you heater doesn't get hot enough!

I run an 82c in my 7 port 1380, which runs fine.

Also and nice graph illustrating the same thing.

The 88c thermostat replaced the 82c thermostat in the UK in 1976 due to tightening emission regulations.
