Looks like a good project... I will be following this as mine is a student budget resto too :/
I wish I knew what colour to do mine, I change my mind every day!
Good luck with this.

cheers mate.. so for that is there a panel or should I make something up to weld in?Thats not a bad project you have there. The rusted parts at the rear window you are worrying about are the waist rail and rear quarter not all that bad really

there's a lot of us doing them for first cars I think
good luck with yours too bud (I read it earlier)
The first car I bought was a MK3 Escort from a mate who had run the engine out of oil and seized it up. I gave him £20 for it and an engine from the scrap yard cost me another £100. I never drove the car as I was only 16 but sold it for £750 and bought my first car my little FOK. I drove the arse out of that as it was a time before speed cameras and camera phones.
Good luck with the project.
It did not take long to rip the engine apart and rebuild it. Then I thought beige was a bit boring so borrowed a mates garage for a bit of BRG action.

If you can, it's a good idea to sand blast the whole shell as you'll always get better results when painting on bare metal, it'll also remove any any surface rust.
If you can't get it blasted, then sanding to bare metal will be as good but just take longer.

I don't mind sanding to bare metal.. it takes time yeah, but Idm..
sandblasting isn't an option really on my budget.. gonna try and put most of my money into parts and do the work myself :)
Always good if you have the time and facilities.
An electric sander with some coarse paper will have that paint off in no time. Or an angle grinder with one of those paint remover things.

Looking good.
That rough finish left by the sanding will be an excellent key for the primer, so it should adhere really well
