Nice to see you back at it mate
How are you going to tackle the crusty bits on the door frame ?

Once i have the skin off i will see how far the rust extends, then i will cut those sections out and add in some new pieces. Bit of a bummer to be honest but very doable.

Had a bit of time away from the workshop so its good to be back on it again. In the meanwhile though i did get my Clubby sorted out with new rad, HG, water pump and a few other bits. Nearly MOT time for him.

Good to hear Neil
Hope it flies through

I should be able to do a bit on my city while I wait for the lad to get some more panels ( that's the plan anyway )

Quarter panel went on without too much fighting and the first real outing for Frosts Cold Front for me and it worked well.

door trial fitted and the gaps are tight, this will change though when i reskin it hopefully next week. Outer sill and jacking point first though.

God i really really really really really really (did i say really yet???) hate Magnum doorsteps. Luckily for you lot courtesy of the forum swear filter i cannot use the language i used on this piece of crap today

IMG_2568_zps2d13128e.jpg

I'm in the process of adding in a new lower section of the step so

1:- the gap will be closed up

2:- the flange will actually meet up edge to edge.

Its pigging awful and it wasn't until i fitted the rear quarter did i realise all the work i did on reprofiling it was a complete and utter waste of time. I may still have to section the thing as well to get the edge to edge part right. Either that or a bloody great 22 lb sledgehammer.

More cursing tomorrow. Just as well our workshop is in the middle of nowhere :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:

Lol

I'm right with you when it comes to those :h@t magnum door steps

How they can sell them as a door step is beyond belief I intend to buy one and beat it to within an inch of its life with a lump of wood just to make me feel better when I finish my resto :-)

Magnum therapy ........ :-)

Back to that bloody doorstep today and it looks like i may have cracked it.

First thing was to align and fit the jacking point

IMG_2569_zps7cfc214d.jpg

then it was onto tacking the new outer sill on after a load of paint was thrown into the cavities and onto the back of the sill itself

IMG_2572_zpscc860852.jpg

then i managed to pulse weld the new section of door step in place

IMG_2571_zps6e80dcf3.jpg

Now the rest of the welding was done on the sill and quarter panel

IMG_2570_zps8c89ee3d.jpg

IMG_2572_zpscc860852.jpg

and then spent an hour grinding everything down

IMG_2573_zps734e3969.jpg

IMG_2576_zps8507157f.jpg

IMG_2575_zps091c0a05.jpg

IMG_2574_zpsa61a5830.jpg

i think that will do for this week. I will do the door skin next week.

I came close a couple of times i must admit but i got into a grinding groove and it went a lot better than i though. I now have to really consider what the heck i'm going to do with the other side when i get to it.

"Grinding Groove", sounds abit 70's John Travolta to me  , although i must add that dancing the boogie with a grinder could be considered a hazard to something ;D .

Will you be using another none-Gen doorstep ? would save on MIG wire and gas + time buying an M-machine one or something.

I made one for Project Erm so unless Will wants to fork out for a Heritage one then that is probably the route i will take. The M Machine one for the MK1 is not too good i have heard BUT i have yet to see a MK3 onwards one as they have not started to produce them. They will be shortly.

Looking good after all that effort Neil

I must admit I'm no fan of grinding either 10 minutes of welding = I hour of grinding = moaning old bag neighbours :-)

Looking forward to a proper M Machine door step too...

Yes it does work quite well as it goes. No heat distortion at all on that lower section of the quarter panel.
