Neil the door skin king!

I hate doing door skins, always have!

so is this nearly finished then?

Also, are you taking Paddy to IMM?

Ben

Hi Ben, yep think i have got the hang of door skinning and repairs now, done a fistful of the buggers now. And no not nearly finished. Once the door is done i'm hanging it to make sure my fabricated door steps will do the business , then it will be onto the flitch repair followed by the jacking point and outer sill. THEN once those bits are done and dusted i will fit the scuttle etc and then the front end.

Yep Paddy will be at IMM

Door time, started with this,
IMG_3152_zps054fd06a.jpg
and ended with this
fba8daf3-f590-4d69-86b0-9fab361db000_zps
A bit crusty in places and quite a bit of filler so the edges needed to be changed
IMG_3155_zps883dcc59.jpg
IMG_3156_zps9e2a8c4e.jpg
IMG_3154_zps649d928e.jpg
And after some grinding and polishing, sealing and a splash of paint we get this
IMG_3158_zps1553e755.jpg

Then it was on with the skin after checking the measurements are the same
IMG_3159_zps3462ea28.jpg
IMG_3160_zpse2b0a119.jpg

Early doors today as my brother in law is coming down from jock land so the final bit of welding will be done probably next week if i have time before IMM.

Nice work as usual mate :-)

Did you make that bottom repair piece yourself ?
Also where you have fitted the skin and the areas where the paint has come off are those plug welds / tacks

Very envious of your door skinning skills mate I have another one to fit on the lads car this weekend last one had a few ripples around the edges and required some filler work hoping for a better job this time

Hi Marco, yes they are plug welds and no the bottom repair section was cut off a proper repair section.

Ahh I see :-)

Just out of curiosity do you drill a hole in the door skin flange and plug from the back or from the front of the skin and grind down/ polish up after ?

Cheers mate

In the Vauxhall main dealer body shop i worked for we put decent tack welds round the inside of the skin flange to the frame and then ground them flat

That's how we did the other skin a few tacks around the inside of the skin after it was fitted just plugged and seamed the top

Not my most favourite job in the world door skins !!

When i first started my panel beating training, i was rubbish at skins. Just couldn't do it well. Always ended up rippling the skin, especially along the bottom.

Once i had got more practice and spent more time with the hammer and dolly learning the proper techniques, it became easier and by the end of my apprenticeship i was just as good as the long term beaters and could replace a skin the proper way with no ripples or imperfections at all in just under 1.5 hours.

It's all about the practice.

There is no way a diy enthusiast will ever need to skin enough doors to get the practice though. Unless you are a natural!

Drilled through the skin to plug weld to the flange and polished up.

L/H door time, so the reskin is finished and it fits in the hole

IMG_3253_zps7bb6265f.jpg

There is a gap as expected so out with the filler rod

IMG_3254_zpsf8e05ad3.jpg

IMG_3255_zps713b1393.jpg

It did need two layers of rod and we ended up with this

Looks great mate :-). Wish I could get them as good as that
Bit of door envy going on :-)

Had a right mare with ours and the replacement hinges from mini spares made it even worse !!!
Ended up fitting the original ones back on and now it fits better

Be glad when it's finished my love for minis is diminishing :-)

New doorstep is now fitted and looks spot on. So much better than Magnum and will now change the other side i fitted previously.

IMG_3257_zpse9774762.jpg

Then it was onto the flitch rust, the replacement flitch from Magnum was pretty poor so i have chopped out the sections i need rather than fitting the complete panel.

So A post section first

IMG_3258_zpsed689a12.jpg

IMG_3259_zps69ad5a7b.jpg

and new section welded in place.

IMG_3262_zpsc4d9ffc1.jpg

Now this is the old section i removed and you can see the rust behind it but fortunately no real damage to the A post stiffener.

IMG_3261_zps5d148f43.jpg

The remaining sections of the flitch will be replaced tomorrow.

Sonikk4;

I noticed in one of the pictures above you have spot / plug weld holes drilled in the doorstep, I take it this is for fitting the Sill?

I am about to fit the Sills and was going to drill holes in the Sill rather than the Door Step but thought how difficult it would be welding and grinding upside down, so I am glad I spotted this :-) Drill the door step and welding from above will be a lot easier.

I have the option with the spit to weld upside down but its so easy to do it this way. Where the sill attaches to the lower quarter i will weld it from underneath.
