I've also heard that even if you have a valid tax disc, that after Tuesday you could get fined for still having it on display on the windscreen.
I haven't heard this.
I'd much rather leave my tax disc in the window. Despite what they have you believe on these traffic cops programs ANPR is not 100% accurate and fool proof. I have been stopped because of it as it said my car did not have an MOT on it. My car did but it was only done a few hours earlier and the system had not updated itself fast enough. Luckily because I had my MOT certificate in the car I was able to prove it did have it and prevented my car getting impounded.
If your car gets impounded even if you can prove that at the time of it being recovered it was legal, you still have to pay the storage fees and recovery fees to the police. A mate of mine learnt this the hard way which he was not happy about.
If I have the tax disc still in my window I can prove that my car is taxed if I ever need to. I am in half a mind to put the receipt for my tax next year in the tax disc holder so I know where it is and again could prove it has been paid for if I ever had to instead of relying on the polices database.
I suppose the safe option would be to remove the tax disc but to keep it in the glove box. Its a shame though as my windscreen has a nice holder for it already.
I've heard both, that you no longer need to display a valid tax disk and/or that you still need to displaying, as not displaying also risks a fine.
I'm still tempted to remove mine, and as one of the other cars tax runs out at the end of this month, then wait to see how long till one of my nosey neighbours thinks (something they aren't good at, at the best of times) are both untaxed.
I had also see on one of these police interceptor programs on channel 5, that its an offence not to carry around your mot/insurance with you in the car at all times. But then I've not bothered for the last 10 years, as if the car was nicked you'd lose them. Driving licence on the other hand is easy, as that's always in my wallet as a back up form of id.
