How many people are going to get nicked next week for not having tax on their car?
Just browsing through ebay at really cheap cars and loads of them are still advertising tax until November, December 2014 and dates well into 2015. Err no. If you sell your car after Tuesday then it won't have any tax so by the time that the auction ends this rule will come into affect.
I'm guessing the DVLA will delay all V5c transfers until after Tuesday anyway as it will make them more money by forcing them to re tax cars again.

I was under the impression that existing tax that had been purchased before the switch was still valid for transfer.
I expect i must have got it wrong?

I've also heard that even if you have a valid tax disc, that after Tuesday you could get fined for still having it on display on the windscreen.

I got a tax reminder for my car at the end of august and it said on the reminder that you no longer need to display a tax disc after 1st october but not that you mustn't

I haven't heard this.
I'd much rather leave my tax disc in the window. Despite what they have you believe on these traffic cops programs ANPR is not 100% accurate and fool proof. I have been stopped because of it as it said my car did not have an MOT on it. My car did but it was only done a few hours earlier and the system had not updated itself fast enough. Luckily because I had my MOT certificate in the car I was able to prove it did have it and prevented my car getting impounded.
If your car gets impounded even if you can prove that at the time of it being recovered it was legal, you still have to pay the storage fees and recovery fees to the police. A mate of mine learnt this the hard way which he was not happy about.
If I have the tax disc still in my window I can prove that my car is taxed if I ever need to. I am in half a mind to put the receipt for my tax next year in the tax disc holder so I know where it is and again could prove it has been paid for if I ever had to instead of relying on the polices database.
I suppose the safe option would be to remove the tax disc but to keep it in the glove box. Its a shame though as my windscreen has a nice holder for it already.

I have been stopped before because the police suspected that i had stolen the car. It was a right mess as it was registered to the previous owner still (he hadn't sent off the logbook) and strangely it was still insured by the person before him!
My insurance cover didn't show up on the database because an existing cover was still on there. That together with the fact i hadn't gotten round to changing my address on my driving licence made for some interesting conversation.
I was cautioned and very nearly had the car impounded but as i remembered the name and address of the person i bought it off and that the owner before him lives in Enfield, they compared that to the database and gave me the benefit of the doubt and let me go with a producer.
I took my docs into the police station the next day and heard no more about it.
I think i will carry the receipt for all my future tax just incase.
So am i right in assuming that now you cannot display a disc, you would be more likely to get away with nipping out in an untaxed car because it wouldn't be immediately obvious to anyone that the car was untaxed?
Don't worry, im not in the habbit of doing that, it's just concerning that people might try.

ANPR will still pick them up and this is the way most people are caught hence why they are scrapping the tax disc.
I do however think there will be more people who will try it on though and not bother. They will get pulled over and argue that it is taxed and complain that because they don't get a tax disc that they can't prove it.
I'm taxed until the end of the year so I don't have to worry about it too much at the minute
Here is what directgov have to say about it:

The way I read it. You don't have to display a tax disc but you can if you wish. They just won't mean anything anymore. Therefore, as I said in my previous post. I will continue to display mine just in case... or a sign that says tax in post for the comedy value.
