Hey people,

A couple of months ago, I got a bit bored and decided to paint pretty much everything in my engine bay with hammerite.. At the time, I thought it looked good but now I think it looks tatty and I wish I had just stuck with painting the engine block. Kinda feel like a bit of a prat right now lol

Any suggestions on how I can remove the hammerite paint from the rubber pipes without obv damaging them? Or would I have to change the hoses completely?

Here's what my engine bay looked like at the time:

I would have thought it would simply scrape off rubber hoses may need to squeeze them to start paint peeling, but then the hoses will need cleaning with something like panel wipe

I saw a trick online that people use to remove paint off plastic is fairy power spray oven cleaner, A guy put a plastic gun on his surface, sprayed it with fairy power spray, and left in 2 hours, came back and it rubbed off with his fingers.

Sorry for going slightly off topic, but what colour hammerite is it? Would be perfect for my engine.

Thanks for the replies.

Most of the hoses won't bend or squeeze as the paint has hardened them and also some are quite thick rubber like the top radiator hose. I need something that will loosen the paint so I can then scrape it off.

Hmm would this work on hammerite paint? I'm worried about chemicals in the cleaner that might weaken the rubber hoses. Hammerite paint is like the worst to remove due to its hardener.. :/

The paint I used is this:

Just a heads up though is that it does change colour due to the heat of the engine to a more turquoise blue colour as you may see from the pic. I didn't mind the colour change tho on the engine block but it depends on the effect you're after
