Hi there,

Just as title states does anyone have any figures of maximum towing weight on a clubman estate? Is it up to the car owner to be sensible with weights or are there laws about how much you can actually tow in said car?

I'd like to think the car will be able to tow 700-800?kg as it will have a 276 and speed isn't necessarily of utmost importance to tow my race car to and from autograss tracks around the country.

Cheers Sam.

A 276, as in the cam? The power produced by the engine would not be my first concern rather how much strain this puts on the rear subframe mounts, assuming that's where the toe hook is.

What class is the autograss car?

I'm sure there's something about 85% vehicle weight for a braked trailer so that's closer to 500kg than 800kg

Two seconds on Google brought this up http://www.miniaddic...read.php?t=2119

303kg by the handbook.

Edit: Gah! Beaten to it!

I think the Max towing weight is 8cwt or 406kg. About half the unladen weight. Later cars, SPi on are not homolgated for towing.

Yes the likelihood is that rear subframe would fall off, was thinking of fabricating my own tow bar mounts, but its nice to have a ballpark figures.

Ps class 4 maybe 7 in the future. Might get the 4 on as it weighs less than 500kg for sure (fully spaceframed mini).

anyways all good food for thought, thanks!

If the 276 is the cam then it will be giving max power fairly high up the rev range. For good towing you want max torque nice and low down.

The towing weights were set based on capabilities of the the brakes. So 500kg GVW braked trailer should be ok. Tow bars were bolted to body with suitable reinforcing plates not bolted to the rear subframe.

My 1980 Portuguese Moke has a Manufacturer's Plate that states GVW 1010kg and GTW (gross train weight) 1610kg. Implying that it can tow 500kg.

A 1980 car will have a VIN plate.  The towing weight is the max train weight from the VIN plate minus the vehicle kerb weight (not the gross vehicle weight) on the day you are towing, providing it is less than 85% of the towing vehicle mass for a braked trailer, or 50% for an unbraked trailer, and you are licenced to tow at that capacity.  The figures quoted by others above are for a Saloon I believe, estates are heavier and so can probably actually tow less as the GTW will very probably not be higher.

Early MPis may tow.  The cutoff date was 01/08/98.
